Smart presented a new, environmentally friendly concept car, full of driving pleasure and extremely low fuel consumption at the 2005 Frankfurt auto show, calling it the Smart Crosstown. Smart's Crosstown featured a new hybrid drive train which, if put into production, would produce Smart and Swatch's fundamental goal: to offer a low-emissions, fun and inexpensive city car.

At the Paris 2002 auto show , the smart, GmbH showed off a sportier-styled Roadster, which hit the market in April 2003. It had a longer front end and open top, based on a stretched platform of the ForTwo. By far the hottest of the Smart series was its sophisticated, stylish and stimulating Smart Roadster and Smart Roadster Coupe.
