Larger automotive manufacturers are making ineffective attempts to go greener and become more fuel efficient. One of the latest to the arena is Renault. Renault is a French automaker who announced they too are working on an EV city car. Reports are they hope to have their city car on the road by 2012 and their goal is to have their electric car ready for the 2012 Olympic Games in London. Renault also, announced they anticipated having their electric vehicles in Israel by 2011.

In 1992 Renault created the Zoom concept car. The Zoom was an urban concept vehicle studied by Matra and Renault. The Matra name was original used for automobiles powered by Renault and called the Matra Djet, which was an update of the Bonnet Jet.

Zoom was a very early undertaking into city cars using the electric power approach. Yet 16 years later they are still claim to need 4 more years to get their car to the market place! Why?

Like most of the EV coming to market this EV will be powered by lithium-ion batteries, developed by Nissan.

They say the car will have a range of 60 to 100 miles between recharges. Built in Europe, and then sold in Israel, before eventually arriving in Asia, Europe and the U.S.

The car will be carrying either a Renault or Nissan badge, depending on each market. These two companies have had an alliance since 1999.

The unnamed EV city car is said to be comparable (right) to the size of their Twingo.

Nissan also plans to have an EV in 2012. Perhaps sharing technologies and platforms?
