The Aptera is an electric vehicle that is a two-seater, and comes with a very futuristic design. It looks a little bit like an egg and has gotten plenty of press as of late. It reminds us of what George Jetson drove in a 1960s cartoon and TV show. Aptera Motors the manufacture is a privately-held company from California, which designs efficient commuter vehicles and has introduced their new Aptera-2e this year.
The co-founders of Aptera Motors, Steve Fambro and Chris Anthony believe they have come up with a pioneering and perhaps more efficient way to travel, and with Idealab's founder Bill Gross supplying needed capital their vision of an improved mode of travel has become a business.
The "Aptera" can go 90 mph on its three wheels and is totally electric.
On a single eight hour charge, you and your Aptera can travel around 100 miles making this a true commuter vehicle.
Their website claims this is equivalent to 300 mpg and the Aptera-2e can be recharged on a standard 110v outlet in less than 8 hours.
The Aptera is designed and assembled at a new assembly facility located in Vista, CA and their composite facility in Carlsbad, CA, where they build the innovative resin-infused egg shells for their cars.
The Aptera's design understands nature and moves smoothly through the wind instead of fighting it and with the composite body structure the company’s visualization has taken shape. The Aptera are selling well and will be rolled out in October and with 4,000 Aptera's pre-ordered deliveries are expected in eighteen months. This smart Aptera will cost between $25,000 and $40,000 and will meet the identical federal safety standards of any other car. However, these prices and other limitations may influence the Aptera's overall sales, and there'll be some opposition from more unadventurous looking cars like the ED Smart Fortwo scheduled for 2010. Did we say less adventurous looking car?
Rumors are that 10,000 Aptera cars will be produced after this year increasing to 100,000 by 2015 if demands allow. A representative for the Environmental Transport Association, a United Kingdom group said "Aptera have taken a radical approach to the design of their first car and it seems to be paying off - the company has been overwhelmed by the number of orders they have taken in their first two months of business."
Fuel consumption is more difficult to sell than last summer when gas prices smashed records. None the less if you're looking for an innovatively radical and aerodynamically style vehicle the Aptera-2e maybe for you!
