toyota_iqconcept_smart.jpgToyota has unveiled a production version of its iQ micro city car at the Geneva Motor Show. The Toyota iQ will be called the iQ 3+1. It was designed in southern France by Toyota's design studio. The design is intended to place emphasis on low fuel consumption, maneuverability and environmental friendliness.

Reports are that Toyota may be importing the city car called the iQ to America. The iQ received a 5-star safety rating in Euro NCAP testing.

The new iQ city car was introduced at the Frankfurt Auto Show last year and follows the radical design of the iUnit Concept Vehicle from a few years ago.

According to Toyota the "i stands for individuality, whilst at the same time also expressing "innovation" and "intelligence".”Q" stands for "quality" and also suggesting that its "cubic" stature gives a "cue" to new value and lifestyle.”

Toyota claims it is the world's most minuscule four-seat car. The new iQ is somewhat bigger than the 2008 Smart ForTwo measuring 117.51 inches with a 79 inch wheelbase.

Toyota even decreased the size of the AC unit.

It also features a panoramic glass sunroof.

Other inventive modifications are:

  • Flat fuel tank under floor
  • Narrower seats
  • Slender down dashboard
  • Compact differential

The car will come with a diesel or two gas engines. Toyota hopes to sell 100,000 units in their first year of production.

The iQ's carbon dioxide emissions are very low, making it a green and planet-friendly car.
