Home Why So Few Hybrids or Electric Vehicles?

For years the American driving public has been blessed with inexpensive fuel prices. And a love for the big bold and fast car. There‘s no single explanation, and unfortunately the internal-combustion engine will continue to dominate our roads for many years to come. Nevertheless, there’s hope on the horizon. Many say it's the automotive manufacturers, politics, oil companies, Wall Street or us, the American car buying public. We believe it’s a combination of all of these! Most placed blame squarely on the auto manufacturer's shoulders and only a few years ago everybody were demanding to locate and jail the killer of (“Who killed the electric car”) the (EV) electric car.
Why So Few Hybrids or Electric Vehicles? Many say it's the automotive manufacturers, politics, oil companies, Wall Street or us, the American car buying public. We believe it’s a combination of all of these! Most placed blame squarely on the auto manufacturer's shoulders and only a few years ago everybody were demanding to locate and jail the killer of (“Who killed the electric car”) the (EV) electric car. But now the possible villains (automotive manufacturers) have been toting the praises of their gas saving cars and the line of attack the electric cars will play in their plans. With the probability of new and tougher penalties on over the top carbon-emitting cars, carmakers are finally doing something positive. The European Commission, as will our government, will exact financial consequences by the year 2012 on companies whose fleet cars have high carbon dioxide emitions. For years the American driving public has been blessed with inexpensive fuel prices. And a love for the big bold and fast car. There‘s no single explanation, and unfortunately the internal-combustion engine will continue to dominate our roads for many years to come. Nevertheless, there’s hope on the horizon. No longer blue-sky philosophy, the automotive manufacturers are quietly lessening their cars CO2 and transforming fuel efficiencies for their vehicles. New automotive technologies enter the mainstream just as quickly as companies can get them on line. Cars like GM's Volt have gone from being an interesting sideshow to the model that could do more than any other to secure the ailing car maker's future. Virtually every carmaker has plans on the drawing board and hopes of having hybrid power trains or totally electric powered cars on US roads within a few years. With any luck these not so niche market cars will play a vital role in the survival of US carmakers. The entire automobile industry and the American driving public must and will dissociate itself from mineral energy and head in the direction of electric-powered vehicles. In all fairness to the American public the choices have been few. Even today there are few electric car manufacturers throughout the world. Most of the cars available look like a box on wheels. They possess little power or the creature comforts we have become accustomed to. However things are changing and are changing fast. As we are all aware with the upcoming election politics plays a huge part in everything that happens in our lives and concerning our driving habits are no different. Many Americans are considering an electric car given that a traditional gas-powered vehicle cost roughly 14 cents per mile while a NEV or a LSV electric car, costs roughly 3 cents per mile. These types of cars also save huge amounts of carbon dioxide from being emitted into our atmosphere. Unfortunately many state's have a maximum speed limit of 25mph for electric powered cars (called NEV, LSV or EV) making the practicality for buying a EV less appealing. There are only a handful of electric cars on our American streets, but if lawmakers give the speed limit a little boost we may see a whole lot more of them in the near future. Being limited to 25mph is simply not functional, safe, or courteous to the other drivers. We say it's time to allow electric cars to go a little faster, and hope both local and federal Legislature will start to agree and begin working on Legislation that will allow for just that.
