"Why are there no diesel smarts offered in 2008?"
"The currently available diesel smarts cannot conform to U.S. EPA standards for NOx (Nitrous Oxide) emissions.  The physical size of the only 50-state, EPA-approved NOx control system (aqueous urea injection & particulate filtration - a dealer-only service item) is too large for the smart to carry.  Diesel smarts may never be approved for U.S. use unless there is some breakthrough in "dry" technologies, and with considerable miniaturization."
