Could this be a 'backpack' for a Smart?

It is not a trailer but thought it was interesting.

I saw a Black and Sliver passion in Hedgesville WV, where i was at the Woods Resort on a retreat when this guy saw me looking at the car, and gave me this look of WTF, well after i said i have one of these in Blue and Sliver, the man told me that he saw an article in the Washington Post that in his words were very negatory on the Smart saying it lost it's momentum and that the interest was dying on the car. It must have been a naysayer who wrote it, but you know i can't find it on their web site. Anyone happen to come across that article and where can i find it? I am sure it was nasty, but then again the man who shared that with me has this silly looking Mercury Moutaineer and well he said i would have been better off getting a Ford Fiesta for a few dollars more.
Ok it is his opinion but it is mine that counts, and mine is right. :D

Maybe this has happened to other people. Maybe it's nothing to be overly concerned about, but it does worry me.

I was in Dothan, Alabama today. My fuel was down to 1.0 Bars and I had already located a gasoline station on my GPS and was headed that way. Stopped at a traffic light, on a slight incline, the engine simply quit ... just died with my foot on the brake at a dead standstill.

There was traffic behind me, and the light changed to green. I put my emergency flashers on, put the car in park, and it started right up without a hint of a problem. After buying four RC smarts at Rite Aid, and fueling up, I drove another 120 miles without a hint of a problem.

I've been driving the car for about 26 months now and this is the first time it has done this.

What happened? Have I got a developing problem?

Hi fellow Smarties, just a quick introduction by way of a recent event that happened to me and my SMART.

Hi fellow Smarties, just a quick introduction by way of a recent event that happened to me and my SMART.

On July 20th, 2010 at approximately 7:55pm I opened my car door and walked away from my rolled SMART car with nothing more than a slightly swollen left hand and a couple of scrapes on my left arm and shoulder, the car was a total wreck and was considered a “write-off” by the insurance company. This little car was amazing and without a doubt contributed to in having saved my life! I would like to thank everyone involved with what was my SMART car.

Travelling with the flow of traffic at about 110 km/h on the QEW Niagara bound, my SMART Car struck the start of the guardrail on the left side of the roadway, head on. I am not entirely sure of all the events, but I do know the car flipped or rolled at least once. I have a vague memory of being on my left side as the car made what I believe was its final roll back onto its four wheels and then coming to a complete stop on the right shoulder of the highway. Still in a daze, or possible shock over what had just happened, I realized that staying in the car was not likely the best thing to do. I took a quick look around the inside of the car and noted that both the driver and passenger windows were intact and the front window was as well. I put my hand on the driver’s door handle and tried to open it - the door opened just as it had the day I took delivery of the SMART car. I have to admit, I did not really think about it much at that point, I simply unbuckled my seat belt and stepped out of the car and walked away to a safe location.

As I was calling 911, I turned and looked back at my SMART. The front end was missing its cowling and the driver side front tire was flat. There were scratches and scrapes along both driver and passenger sides of the car and the glass was missing from the rear hatch. The hazard lights were flashing and there was radiator fluid leaking from the front of the car. As I was talking with authorities on the cell phone, I was starting to realize what had just happened. My SMART had hit a solid object at about 110 km/h, crossed two lanes of traffic in an acrobatic manoeuvre and came to rest on its wheels - and I simply opened the door and walked away!

In response to the 911 operator’s inquiries, I checked myself out. I noticed a scrape on my left hand and a slightly swollen middle knuckle. A brush burn kind of mark on my left under arm, but no signs of blood or broken limbs. I was fine! My SMART car did everything I had read it was suppose to do, it likely saved my life. As the police, ambulance and tow operator showed up and after all the important questions were answered, I remember each of them looking at amazement at the car and then at me. They all could not understand how I simply opened the door and walked away from it without any serious injury. The paramedics checked me over and confirmed that I was all in one piece without broken limbs or skin.

The next day I went to my SMART dealer and ordered my new 2010 SMART which I am currently working on several MODs for.

So if you know anyone who needs to know how safe these cars just send them my way and I would be happy to let them know what happened to me and my SMART.

Patching into the standard wiring harness?

Hello all,

I had the dealer (sub-contractor) install the Kenwood DNX 6020 EX in my smart a few weeks ago and reading about all of the audio upgrades got me to thinking...

From what I can tell he used the factory wiring harness with some kind of breakout adapter. Just by the feel of the floor it does seem like the "radio 10" sub woofer under the seat is working, and the upgraded door speakers sound great.

There were no connections made in the back of the unit for the sub woofer. Does this mean that somewhere in the wiring harness there is a crossover that amplifies for the sub? Any specs or diagrams on how this is setup?

How many professionals here have bartered services/goods? My wife was about to send my boss a bill for doing some graphic work for the RV dealership I work for. I'm going to see if they'll just trade me for a 1 1/4" receiver stock, a set of Roadmaster baseplate tow-hole plugs and a sheet of Filon (Filon is the smooth siding you see on the non-corrugated fiberglass trailers). I already ordered this stuff and it is sitting in stock awaiting me to pay for it.

Excellent idea - we'll see if he goes for it.

Anyone else trade off stuff? How do you go about doing it? Craigslist? The wife is now a starving graphic artist who just bought an $800+ computer and a $1200 latest/greatest graphics program so I would like to recoup my investment somehow.

A friend said one of the biggest differences in sound between speakers of equal size, is the size of the magnet. That would explain the incredible difference in sound when my son and I installed new door speakers yesterday. We put in Infinity Reference 6032cf 6.5" speakers, that I got off ebay for $65 shipped (thanks for the birthday present, Mom!!). I have a cabrio, and so had the 5 speaker audio - but lemme tell you, the door speakers I pulled out are very crappy. Obviously paper cones. Check out the difference between the two:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/25882159@N07/4960466540/
The smart speaker feels very inadequate, if you know what I mean, sitting next to the Infinity.

The only trouble with the install that we had was in pulling off the trim piece inside the door, behind the mirror - none of the instructions I saw for that were clear, and I guess I understand why - it's simply a matter of man-handling the piece straight up (after removing one screw). My son, when not going to college, has been changing tires at a chain store for the last 3-4 years, and so is stronger than me these days - he managed to get both sides loose. Otherwise, the guides at Evilution worked great, with enhanced tips from fmaxwell at this link: http://www.smartcarofamerica.com/for...dations-12704/

Between painting my headlights and this, we've now had the entire front end and door panels off at some point - like 2/3's of the car?? Anyway, I'm very glad we did this upgrade. It sounds SO SO SO much better. Well worth 2-3 hours of (easy) work. Oh yeah, and although I've seen some BEAUTIFUL looking speaker upgrades on here, with the speakers mounted outside the door panel with very nice looking speaker grills, I just mounted them inside. Since I have a convertible, I want to keep my ICE looking as stock as possible, so as not to attract the evil, convertible-cutting thieves out there.
