1st fill up

After having my new Passion for over a week, and putting up with all the kidding from folks at work... payback time. My first fill up was 40.53 MPG ! Let them laugh at that !
Jim.

Nice first tank.

If you haven't already, sign up for a Fuelly.com account. Many of us have them, and it's fun to track your fuel economy. You can also generate a neat little banner like this one:

Fuelly.com is a great way to keep track of how well one's car is doing MPG wise.

I "enjoyed" my first fill up too this week. It was about 5* when I went to the gas station so I stuck the fuel nozzle in the tank and put it on auto fill. I stuck my hands in my pockets and was washing my back window not really paying attention to the gas filling. The nozzle did not shut off automatically and it overflowed and spilled all over the side of the car.

Not only did I dirty my car (and gloves), but I can't report my mpg on my first tank because I don't know how much gas I used.

Has this happened to others? I can't figure out if I had the nozzle in the car wrong or if the cold had something to do with my mishap. I have noted that I am limited to putting gas into my car. Now, I can't even do that correctly.

I have found that washing the rear window just makes the back of the car look dirtier. Stay with your pump, at least until you develop a trust for it. Sometime the cold can mess with the sensors on the pumps. They should't but they do.

I had the overflow happen once. It was on the slowest setting, and may not have been in as far as it should have been. Or, maybe it was a bad sensor in the nozzle. Either way, I watch it more now.

No need to worry about the fuel consumption on the first tank - spare yourself the dissapointment most feel when the car is new-out-of-the-box with a tight engine. And your second tank results may be deceptive if you are working with a lot of "neck" gas now because of the nozzle malfunction. With the nozzle problem behind you, and beginning with the 3rd fill, you should see your mileage increasing as you put miles on the engine.

I made significant increases with each fillup through the first hundreds of miles until they tapered off and became steady around 2,000.

I hope I didn't jinx you when I teased about you knowing how to "fill the tank". Since you didn't add anything about upgrading the shifter in the other thread _ I assume you handled that with ease. Now that you christened your smart (gas bath) don't be leery on making it do everything one of those "biggie" cars would do. She can handle it and she may even like it . Take those gas pump nozzles and shove them all the way in . I won't describe the process any further (moderators may be watching) but I think you know what I am talking about.
