Do you know who rents them and/or for how much? I hope I don't come off as pushing, I really loved the smart when I test drove and just like the idea of it, small, but does the trick, plus its great for Boston. I think its kind of funny too, cuz I'm 6'2" 220 and I'll be getting a smart car. I'd imagine I'll get a few laughs/giggles/comments when I get out of it. Wouldn't you think?

I don't know, man. A quick Google search turned this up:

Rent a Smart Car! - NYC, NJ, PA, CT, Miami, Los Angeles, Chicago, Boston

I think some people tend to be too trusting and very naive about this sort of thing. Do you know how many scams there are going around internet car forums these days? Thieves search autotrader to find easy marks. The interent is the next step. Why do you suppose most people blank out their licence plate numbers when they post pictures of their cars? Too easy to track down where they are. Cops and vehicle registries aren't the only people who can trace this information.

Exactly! If I were a thief, this would be one of the first places I'd start looking and casting the bait. And I'd swear on a stack of bibles as tall as you like to gain your confidence. I'd even tell you that I'm a baptist preacher looking to economize if that will suck you in. Heck, I'll even give you my fake driver's licence and fake credit card, too. No biggie, I've got lots of spare blanks in the drawer. I'll even leave you my stolen Mercedes while I have your Smart. More than even trade, right? Why would I bother with your Smart when I have a Benz? Because right now, I don't have a customer for a Benz, but I've got someone who will pay cash for a Smart. Next week I steal another Benz when I have a customer for it.

Luke, there are a number of factors that you have not mentioned. Have you put your $99 down and are on the list? If so, have you configured? If you haven't then to the dealer you are a tire kicker and not a a serious buyer.

If you are serious and have gone through the order process, I would think that most dealers could make arrangements for you to take a car when yours is a "short distance out". At that time you can still cancel and get your money back. The only cost to you is the interest lost on the $99, not much today.

The other factor, and I almost hate to mention it is your age. If you are on the young side, well not fair but that is the way it is!

Also remember that for most people the most expensive thing they own, aside from a house, is the car. And should it be wrecked, even though you might be totally innocent of fault, the owner is out of a car for a year because you can't just go to the dealer and pick up another.

1) I want to take the passion for a test drive with my girlfriend in the car, but Herb Chambers won't let me. I'm hoping that I could rent or borrow a smart from somewhere to take it for a ride.

2) I've test driven the passion on the highway and everything, but I'd love to take it for a day or two (possibly a weekend) to get a feel for what its like in everyday life.

I'm hoping someone knows of a way for me to do both of these things... I figure this would be the place to check. If you have any feedback or input, please feel free to write back in the forum.

Thanks
Luke

Not to mention, scratches, dings, bangs and bumps! Insurance rates will go up! Anything could happen to anyone at any time. I don't even let my family members drive my car. I am very possessive of my cars (and I LOVE my family!!!), but their still not driving it!!!
We wait like, what... nine months for our Smarts to arrive. We wait like, what... nine months for our children to arrive.... Would you loan out your newborn child to a couple who's not sure if they want to have one of their own????? Really now?!?!?!?

I am sorry but I cannot believe that anyone could ever equate a baby to a car. That is unbelievable. You must not have kids. I do and I dont care about a car, thats all it is a car. A replaceable car not a baby and btw child birth is very special and a delivery of a car is well just a car. Here is my youngest daughter two days ago. Now can you really equate that to a car?
