CT Sales Tax Exempt!

Saw a thread over at the other smart car forum that the smart is exempt from sales tax because it achieves over 40 mpg.
Here's proof! http://www.ct.gov/drs/cwp/view.asp?Q=400072&A=1436
I am very surprised that this wasn't brought up before, this is a huge selling point and makes it much easier to swallow the prep fees.

True, its not on the list, but I cant see how they couldn't accept it. They would have to amend it. I think I will send an email. This could have been drawn up in the fall, but at the bottom of the document, it states that it was enacted January 14th.

Here is what I wrote, will update with answer (if I get one!)
To Whom it May Concern,
I am writing to enquire about the eligibility of the 2008 smart fortwo to be included in the list that is in IP2007(30.1) about high mileage vehicles that would be exempt from Connecticut State Sales Tax. I am planning on purchasing this car new within the time frame included with the exemption, however the said car is not on the list. The fortwo's EPA estiamtes of 41mpg highway make it eligible for this tax exemption.

Thank You,

It is listed for IL

but no state tax exemption yet

http://www.smartcarofamerica.com/gal...hp?i=1066&c=18

It's listed as a Green Vehicle (high rating) so I would think they would amend their list and add the smart - Good Luck!

From CT DRS:
Quote:
The Exemption for High MPG Passenger Motor
Vehicles:
Purchases and leases of passenger motor
vehicles that meet the following conditions qualify
for exemption under Conn. Gen. Stat. §12-412(110):
• The vehicle must be a passenger motor vehicle, as
defined in Conn. Gen. Stat. § 14-1(63). A
motorcycle is not a passenger motor vehicle and
so purchases and leases of motorcycles do not
qualify for this exemption. A passenger motor
vehicle may, but need not be, a hybrid passenger
car;
• The vehicle must have a USEPA estimated city or
highway mileage rating of at least 40 miles per
gallon; and
• The purchase or lease must occur on or after
January 1, 2008, and on or before June 30, 2010.
The vehicle does not need to be on a list. It only has to meet those 3 criteria. The document goes on to list some cars that qualify, but the list is not exclusive.
