Any hikers in the house?

We've recently been bitten by the hiking bug and love driving our little smart around So Cal for day hikes. We're just starting out and was wondering if there are any other owners that hike. Any trails to recommend for summer hikes? Also, any recommendations on light day packs?

Canyon Park in Monrovia has a lot of hiking trails and water falls. There is also Chantry Flats and the Mt. Wilson hiking trail out Pasadena. Check the US Forest Service Websight to get detailed information.

Thanks Bob! I've also been looking at localhikes.com. It's looking like during the summer, we need to start out very early in the morning or in the late afternoon. I'm thinking Mt Wilson area or Mt Baldy as our next hike.

I grew up in L.A., and I recall Griffith Park had some good hiking trails. You could look into that, sounds like fun.

Try "The Bridge To Nowhere", an interesting day hike. I did it several years back, it was interesting and fun.

THAT looks like an awesome hike. Someone posted a great review with a lot of pics over on Yelp. It looks like we need some more equipment before we attempt that hike. Like sandals to cross the river, walking poles, a map & compass, or some gps iphone app.

I live in Long Beach and love to head up the 605 to the hills above historic Uptown Whittier. Google Maps will show you several interconnecting trails in those hills. There are several trail heads in Whittier, La Habra Heights and Hacienda Heights. One that comes to mind is a trail head in Whittier on Greenleaf just north of the Uptown district. Depending on the trail, you can get views of the southern LA basin and OC, the westside and the West San Gabriel Valley.

You can also stop and check out Tricky Dick's alma mater, Whittier College.

I live in Virginia and am into Volksmarching, a different type of hiking, and have a red/black passion that is now our primary "get to" car. Check out ava.com and check your state's club listing. You might find walkers with smarts in a club. By the way volksmarches average 10 km /6.2 mi.
