The original box is completely removed.
We recommend adding a Cold Air Scoop to increase the amount of incoming air. Here is the direct link to the scoop:

As far as the comment about it pulling hot air from the hottest part of the engine... Here is what the manufacturer has stated:
"We've driven 40-50 miles and opened up the engine compartment and we were able to touch the heat shield and put our hands back where the side opening is without a problem. It is definitely not the hottest part of the engine."
The original version of the intake has and continues to work very well for those that have actually purchased one and used it. Don't take out word for it, but take the words of those that have used it and commented on numerous threads.
We realize that it is not possible for us or the manufacturer to convince everyone and that is OK. We do not take any offense about the feedback from anyone. You are all certainly free to speak your mind and offer feedback on this and any other item we introduce.
We can only speak from our own personal experience and the experience of others that have used the original intake. It works! The folks that have purchased on seem happy and satisfied and many of them have gone on this board and openly stated that.
We now carry two versions of the intake. The original with the added splash/rain shield and the new version.
We recommend the new version to be used with a cold air scoop, which increases airflow to the filter and by doing so boosts performance even more. Is it necessary? No, but it does help even more.
Thank you everyone for your support...
