Define "sealed"...
sealed as in the air from the engine bay cannot seep into the fresh cold air coming from the outside.

If you look carefully at other similar products on the marketplace you will see a difference in the way the shield is designed. The shield on the SILA intake has only one opening. In the front where the side vent blows air directly in to the shield and in to the filter.

Other intakes on the market have openings on the back and some also on the underneath. This can allow more hot/dirty air from the engine bay to enter the shield and be sucked in to the air filter. With the SILA those changes are greatly reduced.

In addition, the SILA Aluminum intake is much lighter that the other intakes on the market.

Hope that helps explain it a bit better. If you close examine the pictures of all the intakes and the shields you will see a difference. All of them are good products, but we believe the current SILA intake is one of the best solutions in the marketplace.

It would help if you show the back of the canister. As it appears now, the decorative holes in the pipe flange seems to suggest opportunities for engine bay hot air to come in, but as I understand it, the back of the canister is sealed except for the three bolt mounting holes. Is that right? And I'm not clear on the purpose of that hole near the base of the canister; would that hole let some hot engine air in?

You are correct. The shield only has 3 mounting holes in it and once the two are bolted together all the holes are sealed. The small hole at the bottom was put in place just in case there is any condensation or moisture that may gather inside the shield. It should drain out of the front and if for some reason it gets all the way back it would come out of the small hole. As far as heat getting in there the hole is so small that it is not an issue.

We will try to get some more pics of the intakes done soon.

My only concern would be, since I live on the East Coast in Connecticut where we get some rain, is that if I partner this with a ram air scoop that I might hydro lock the engine or cause unwanted water to enter into my engine. How do you prevent this from happening?
