This shows that Clear Lake Iowa is closest to the middle but not a lot of Hotel options there. St Louis, no where near the middle, Des Moines is close but what to do and a little to flat, Omaha, no where near the middle by this definition.
gee...I always thought the Dakotas, Nebraska and Kansas were the plains...If you chop off those states the center of the midwest moves east to Milwaukee or Chicago!
In any event, 500 miles is not too bad...been meaning to visit Chicago someday, that would break the trip up in half - something to think about.
I'd so love to come...
But I don't think I could do the 6.5 hour drive from St. Louis.
That Weekend is absolutely perfect, though. I could get that Friday off. Ugh. The torture.

Drove down to St.Louis for NOPI this summer wasn't a bad drive at all. Would have no problem driving to Cali. If I had a cruise control.

Or if I had it... But I'm too lazy to get one or put one in.
The last long trip I went on was to Rochester, NY. 14 hour drive (half of it me driving). Then I had my Impala with its cruise.
Money is a factor in not being able to come, hence the time issue.. unless I sleep in the smart. Hmm, that may work...

Bring a small tent and a sleeping bag plenty of places to camp in WI. That's why I like atving so much It's the cheepest form of motorized recreation.
I have seen trailers for motorcycles that fold out into pretty good size tent trailers. They would be light enough to pull behind a Smart car I'd think.
Years ago, one of the campgrounds we stayed at had small cabin/tent setups that were the size of a couple of beds. I believe they were fairly inexpensive. Something to check on maybe??

You can just try to get a space at either Devils lake state park, or Mirror Lake State park and Pitch a tent.
Or if you don't even have room for a tent with your luggage you can try Dellsjellystone
