1st fill-up 37.5 mpg!! 80% highway miles, mixing between auto and paddle shifters. Mostly snow and ice driving, but she handles great in either condition!
To those who are sharing high MPG numbers, please also tell your specific driving techniques, and not just city/freeway. Manual or 'D' shifting? Normal or conservative shift points? Tire pressures? Outside temp.? These are all factors... let's isolate the right formula to replicate your successes.
First fill up - 36.36, second fill up 41.00. This is Oregon and we're not allowed to pump it ourselves (I know, lame) so I think the second fill may have been short.
The next tank will tell. I did mostly highway driving (in auto) the first two fills but this week I've been attacking a giant hill 4 times a day (in manual).
1st fillup: 34.229 MPG mixed city and freeway mostly in auto mode with no a/c.
Second tank was about the same, third tank was 29 mpg. I am almost at 1000 miles and have been letting the car rev out to 4500 before shifting. Also it is hard to get a full tank w/o "burping" the car. I find that I have to rock it back & forth a bit then I can get another 3/4 gallon into it. Since this is going to replace my 600SL, that gets only about 11 mpg in town on a good day, I am very happy.
BTW, people laugh when I tell them we are selling the SL in favor of the smart, but it's true. We wanted a convertible for evening drives with a power top, heated seats, a good stereo, and a bit of style. We got all of that with the smart + a great little city car too!
With approx 1000 miles on the car, it's loosened up a bit. 45.4 mpg. Mostly in auto mode, though I do shift into neutral at lights. My commute is 30 miles each way. 10 miles on suburban roads, 12 miles freeway, and 8 miles of mountain driving. I have another fill-up due tonight, but the car's range looks to be around 320-340 before the reserve light comes on. I'll post tonight's figures here when I get them. Mileage looks to have improved about 5% in the 1st 1000 miles. For reference, I get around 20-21 mpg in my Cayenne on the same route.
OK funny story about mileage. Well I thought it was funny after I quit being embarassed. I have been checking my mileage and have been getting between 34 and 37mpg in mixed hwy/city driving in both manual and auto mode. Temperatures here are cold... 5-25 degrees. Tire pressure is good. Car is clean for the most part but hard to keep it clean b/c of the salt and snow... anyway I digress... anyway, while driving the Blue Max this time, the gas gauge wasn't dropping. So I scheduled an appointment for service at my friendly Smart Center. Well the fuel gauge finally moved and I thought I would stop at the gas station to check and see.. Well low and behold, my mpg was nearly 42/gal. So I was pleasantly surprised and saved from further embarassment by not going in for service. I too am please at getting 34 because driving my xterra.. I only get 15/gal. Russ
I posted similar on some other thread, but this one looks more active. So here goes. First fill was 34.5MPG. I'm 90% freeway, at speed, and driving the car pretty hard. 25 miles to my shop, and 24.5 are freeway. Yeah, yeah, not the ideal car for it, but I ordered and bought it on a whim.......so why not use if for awhile. (My wife H-A-T-E-S the thing, so maybe it won't be around for long?)
I use auto mode sometimes, use manual mode sometimes, top down when it's at least low-50's (so there's a lot more drag to consider at freeway speed). Tire pressure as on the sticker; was waaaaay too high in front on delivery.
Last tank was at 39, this one is at 41. My drives are a pretty good mix of highway at up to 75 mph and some street. Almost always using manual mode, with A/C about 20% of the time right now. Premium gas only, no particular brand.
