Last fill up

1250 miles on the Smartie 170 mile fill up 4.83 of 92 Oc at 335.9 gives me 35.19 all in town driving lots of stop and go all in auto mode. Starting a 200 mile freeway drive later today will post on that fill up

Tank #3 323.6 miles using 7.473 gal = 43.3 (rural 80% city 20%)
Tank #4 344.2 miles using 8.566 gal = 40.182 (HILLY state roads 40%, Interstate 40%, city 20%)

Now I am over 1000 mi and run it on the Interstate. Using the scangauge helps me feather foot and watch the miles per gallon).

Notice that I put in over the 8.4 gal. The light was flashing when I pulled into the station. I also tripped the vent valve - what is that you ask? On the forward side in the filler neck is a little plastic rod that if you push it down it opens the vent to the tank and allows more fuel than the normal space for expansion. Normally the cap opens this valve when you screw the cap back in. This is there to keep you from totally filling the tanks and why sometimes we seem to get more or less fill of gas.

My diesel Jettas all had these and I removed them because diesel doesn't expand like gas and they don't have a carbon canister to saturate with fuel. That extra on those TDI's let me go nearly 800 miles between fill-ups.

This time on my smart I knew that I was going to drive another 15 miles home so I knew that if the fuel expanded that I would have used some of it up and not flood the carbon trap. I don't recommend it for amateurs, but if you wonder what that is and why if you push the nozzle against it that you hear a fizzing sound, that is the bubbles of gas that are in the tank. Not recommended for those that aren't very cautious and I didn't top off I just clicked it again a few times after the first major shut off.

I'll just throw this out there - anybody want to start tabulating all the results and see if we can arrive at some meaningful conclusions? Lots of different results, your mileage may vary, etc. so without some sort of comparison we're flying by the seat of our collective pants here.

Re: 24 mpg on first tank.
First day I got the car I drove in "D" to get used to it, now manual only (not using the paddles) as I'm used to a stick. So far used 2 clicks on the 2nd gas tank and have driven 48 miles,....which isn't good either. I'm a very defensive driver, so I agree that something is amiss, I'll keep you posted, thanks

Poor mpg 26.4

I am disappointed and perplexed with the mpg from my 1st 2 tanks.
200 mi 7.56 gal = 26.5
182 mi 6.9 cal = 26.3

I have not been driving it hard since it is in the break in period. 99% manual mode. Moderate 60 degree weather.
The only explanation that I can think of is that my drives are mostly less than 2miles in town so it barely gets warmed up. But when I drove our Prius I got a normal 44-46 with the same pattern.
I sure hope it gets better.

Maybe I have a leak in my tank.

John

I guess 37.6 mpg isn't too bad. Still trying for 40.

Well at least you joined the 300 club.

Back roads to Big D

Made a back roads country trip to Dallas yesterday And got the best mpg yet. Going 65 or less and going from little town to little town until I got close to Metroplex. Had 15mph Cross wind most of the way 192.4 miles on 4.65 gal for a 41.37 MPG rate. If it keeps getting better I am going to love it.

I just ran a 1/2 tank of gas in automatic, rather than the paddles. Same kind of city driving, a few freeway hops. No change in mileage either with or without using the paddles, 38 MPG. My overall average for the past 1200 miles has remained at 37.5 MPG.
