First tank calculated out at only 37.6 mpg, which was a little disappointing at first. However, I figured the original tank was probably not topped off as I would do it. I just did the second fill-up, squeezing the filler handle just one more time after the first auto-shut-off, as was done on the first fill-up. Happy to calculate out 41.6 mpg this time, with a mix of city and freeway miles something like 67%/33%. Driving style is obviously conservative, using the automatic shifting almost exclusively.
Mine continues to climb even as my driving style deteriorates. (Oops, that didn't sound good - I mean less attention to getting good mileage.) From 36-37 early on in the break-in period to low 40's from 1500 until this last tank- 50.6 mpg for it (at 2600 miles) although I'm skeptical about it's validity considering more a/c use and a heavier foot.
I was averaging 43-44 mpg for the first 6 tanks, then added a Doug Thorley exhaust and increased pressure in the tires to 40 all around. I'm now getting 47-48 regularly.
This is 60/40 highway/city driving in moderately hilly terrain. (I have 450 feet of net elevation change over a 20-mile commute with a couple of extra ups and downs in there.) I drive in 'D' all the time and use Shell V-Power 92 Octane fuel.
Getting away from driving in automatic all the time and going to manual boosted my mpg from 40-43 up to 45.9 on my last (9th) fill-up. Same route every day, 30 miles one way, 75% freeway, conservative driving, BP 93 octane, single occupant. I noticed the automatic mode shifts into higher gears WAY too soon for me - and the mpg seem to verify.
Without A/C, without ABS, without ASC, without much in the way of creature comforts. Don't get me wrong, they are great cars, but they are also 16 years old and in my neck of the woods there just aren't that many left that have not died of cancer.
Today's fill returned 40.9 mpg - straight commuting. No highway.

And let's not even mention emissions.
41.3 last tank, with 3600 on the car, mixed driing and lots of hills!
End of second tank is starting to get a smidgeon over 40mpg. car's still settling in, greatly calmed down after first tank evaporated away! Sure half of it is car settling and other half is me adapting to the car itself. Still continue to be very, very happy with my purchase.
