I've tried this three times. From a gas station in Long Beach to work in West Hollywood and back to the same station is around 67 miles. I carefully top off each time I'm at the station. One afternoon fill was 1.59 gallons. Another was 1.67 gallons. Today's fill was 1.62 gallons. My drive consists of half freeway (70 mph and bumper to bumper) and half city streets using 91 octane Shell Premium.

I admit my tests are not completely controlled but it gives me some idea that I am conserving fossil fuel.

I'll try that when I get the time, but FUELLY will really come in handy when I get the smart...

The Envoy is just some practice...

i wonder how that would change with an after-market turbo. himmmm

This brings up a question I had. I keep thinking am I doing anything wrong? I am driving 80% highway at minium! Then it hit me!

I have a 15mi comute to work. It takes me an average 35 min to get to work. Most of the time 45 min. That's about 3min per mile. That's about 20mph avg. Some times its less because the tol road thats suposed to save time is sometimes the same parkinglot as I 35.

So, if that is the case, and only about 3-6 miles are highway speed, am I truly doing mixed driving or is it really mostlly "city"?

I'm thinking too much, and its hovering around 38 so its 10 better than the matrix. I just want to do the best I can!

21 - 23 MPG
Here is some real mileage:
Los Angeles city driving, easy on the gas, after @ 3,900 miles is 21 to 23 mpg.
That's it. Mercedes claims there is nothing wrong with my Smart (Passion)
I get 21 mpg on average same driving with my Mercedes 230 C Coupe Kompressor.

Top down wind drag?

I calculate my MPG at every fill-up. I have about 10,000 on my 2008 Passion Cabriolet. Historically she averages 32 – 37 around town and 43 – 46 on the Interstate.

I have made two “identical trips” from middle Georgia to the Tampa, Florida area. First trip (top up most of the way due to inclement weather) I averaged 43.5 going down and 45.2 coming back. I drove very conservatively due to the weather and an over abundance of “smokies” on I-75.

On the beautiful, fun-filled weekend at the Smart Anniversary Party in Orlando I went topless just about the entire trip. I drove HARD: 80 – 85 MPH most of the trip. Top speed according to GSP was 87.9 MPH. Saw only two smokies going down and one coming back. I am thankful they did not see me! My overall MPG was 32!!. I have had several convertibles over the years and never had MPG affected this much due to top down. Possibly the 32 MPH was caused by speed rather than top down.

What do you think?

But Dave, it's hard to hold back all 71 of the horses that are so eager to go!

MPG

I only drive my SMART around town, no more than 10 miles round trip,
in automatic at all tiimes, and I get 28/29 MPG. But when people ask me about the MPG, I say 30. I feel guilty about the lie, but I also feel emabaressed that a car this small doesn't get better mileage.
Once, just once, I got 34 MPG and I really had to baby it.
