just picked up the car on the 14th, used '08 Passion Coupe, 7500 miles. first fill up, 201 miles 5.1 gallons=39.4
Mainly what I'd call "country" driving, 40-60mph state highways, few stops, Brooksville FL. Ocassional jaunts on I-75.

That's it. Mercedes claims there is nothing wrong with my Smart (Passion)
I get 21 mpg on average same driving with my Mercedes 230 C Coupe Kompressor.
you have got to be beating the snot out of that thing. There is just no way your doing you math right. FILL the tank erase your trip odo. When you get to 0.0 on the fuel guage divide the miles by the 8.1. I think he might be a toyota dealer

Maybe you're too easy on the gas. The 3 cylinder engine really needs to get up to speed in order to be efficient. If I drive stop and go traffic or try and keep under 30 MPH, I get horrible mileage. 5th gear doesn't usually kick in until 35-40 MPH and unless I'm running flat or downhill, 5th uses more gas than 4th to maintain the same speed - because I'm opening the throttle more, trying to get it faster, vs. being happy with status quo in 4th. How do I know? Scangauge. My overall city MPG went from 27 to 35 using lessons learned from this $140 device. During that time my top speed in the city went from 40 to 50 or so.

Don't be afraid to get it up to 4K or 5K RPMs for a burst or two... the sooner you get up to 50MPH, the more often you're hovering at 40+ MPG.

On the converse side, broberts - your 32MPG at 80+ MPH is actually pretty impressive. We've had members measure their consumption at 27MPG maxed out at 90MPH.

I have had a very steady average of 37 for months. This last fill, I went easy on the pedal, used cruise control whenever possible and stayed in manual. I increased my mpgs to 40.78. (I know one tank doesn't tell the whole story)

I calculate by the following method:

Zero the trip. Fill. Drive. Fill again. Note the number of miles on the trip and divide by the number of gallons purchased. That gives you mpgs for one fill. Repeat.

This method is accurate and you can fill at any point (ie 1/2 empty). The smart's gas gauge is not accurate enough to calculate miles per gallon.

I don't have the luxury of filling myself (Oregon Nanny Law), so I go to the same station, same pump and never let them top it off.

Happy driving!

Enuff already...!
I bought my smart because it is what it is...a smart.
I really don't give a hoot anymore about squeezing mileage out of this little car. It was bought because it is something special and if it gives decent mileage... fine. That is not why I bought it...I saw it in Europe and just wished I could have one in the States...well now I finally have one in my garage and I'm elated.

We get anywhere between 42 and 49 MPG. Lots of traffic and stop lights driving up and down RT 19 from Spring Hill to New Port Richey. Don't drive it very hard, I actually baby it. No jack rabbit starts or punching the throttle. Drive the speed limit or 5 miles over. Couldn't be happier with the mileage. Use high octane gas as recommended.

Valid point!
One nice thing about this li'l car is that you can drive it like you stole it -- admittedly, this is relative -- and still get decent fuel economy.
On topic, I've seen 40 and 44 MPG on the interstate (the latter was on a stretch where I was not trying to keep up with 80 MPH traffic, and might have had a bit of a tailwind... not sure about the latter point).

After 2200 miles . . .

After 2200 miles I finally broke the 40mpg barrier~! Of course, most of my driving is around town - 35 - 55mph. But the mileage has been slowly increasing with each tankful. I think it broke 40 because my last tank included a 160mi R/T run to the dealer for a new roof sunscreen and a couple of 40mi R/T runs up the road.
Considering how I drive I feel anything over 34mpg is GRAVY!

5400 miles, all of it rural/ state highway driving (read as: 5 miles between lights, everyone does 75mph), and I get 44-46MPG with the Pirelli snow tires. It also tackles my driveway just fine, which is nice, since it's a mile long, gains 500 feet, and is unpaved.
