3d fill up, at 588 miles. 30.1 mpg. AC on, some hills, 60% highway, 40% city. Used manual all the time. Shift for optimal torque, e.g., do not want to lug engine at/below 2K rpm; try to keep the vehicle between 3 to 4K rpm.
Presume the mileage will improve as the engine gets totally broken in, and I realize my driving style is not conducive to optimal mpg's.
It will improve. I averqaged 35 mpg for the first 1000 miles. I'm now approaching 10,000 miles & since that first 1000 miles, I've averaged 40.4 mpg.
I am getting mix of 32 to 37 MPG, can't really say how many city and how many highway.
It's not great MPG, on top you have to put in premium
I will like to ask people to post the gasoline they use too.
If the gas keeps going up, I may switch
It's hard as the dickens to approach 60+ mpg for an entire tank, but mid-50s is "do-able." Of course, this depends on what your driving conditions are. If you're in a hurry, mid-40s is about it. But if you can drive in the 35-to-50 mph range, 55-or-so mpg is a piece of cake.
Of course, YMMV.

PS: I know my mileage is a little better than normal but, believe me, there are folks making mods that lead to mileage that would blow mine out of the water. I don't coast, and I don't turn the engine off at red-lights. My mileage is real world and is reproducible by anyone who really wants to do it. If I were really trying to prove a point, I'd take fewer short trips and NEVER run the air. That's what it takes for me to average over 60 mpg over an entire tank.
My driving is 95% expressway in off hours, and my mileage over 14,000 miles has been close to 40 MPG most of the time. For some reason it drops off to about 35 MPG in winter highway driving.
I just drove to Dallas and back and averaged 42.117. Now that is driving roughly 70mph average speed. As for around town, depending on my driving, 36 - 38, which is about 20 hwy 80 cty.
Also,
since it has been over 95 pretty much most of the month of June, I have been running the AC on and Top up.

My Smart gets on the average 38 mpg mostly beltway/I-66 driving and in town driving. and i have 12,855 on the odometer. The most i ever gotten in town is near 40 mpg, and long haul driving on about 41 mpg, one time getting up to 50 mpg which was the weekend our group did the Skyline drive meet in October, you know mountain road stuff most of which was downhill driving and the Smart proved itself a worthy mountain car thank you.
The key to the whole thing is driving habits, you know don't speed and avoid jack rabbit take offs which BTW is very easy to do as the grannie tranny can be so slow sometimes.
The worst mileage I got on the whole trip (and EVER in zippy, for that matter) was the 2 days through Kansas and Eastern CO. - average 32.9 over 4 fills (and 2 fills were 30.8 and 30.7)
Hey all, we've had our smart for close to a month now and we're getting 40+ consistently regardless of highway or city. And trust me, when I drive it, I drive it. Speed limit? Nah.
I can't say enough about how pleased we are with the car so far.
at the 980 mile mark, filled up when the gauge showed 1/2 full. 4.76 gal. at 177 miles netted a bit over 37 mpg, a real improvement from an earlier fill-up at about the 400 mile mark on the odometer which netted 30 mpg.
I drive solely as a manual, and the mix is 65% highway, 35% city.
I keep the tach between 3 to 4K, and rarely let the revs drop below 2K. My shift points run between 4.5K up to just over 5K.
Love the transmission; an engineering marvel, though I admit to not liking to drive in D. Too oriented toward optimal gas mileage, which leads to too much engine lugging for my liking.
