if i drive it hard, w/o regard to mileage, i get about 30.
if i drive it carefully, i get approx 36. i imagine that i could achieve perhaps 40 with very careful driving under optimal conditions, without all the high-miling tricks.
Just got back from Yellowstone NP, inside the park speed limited is 45mph, force to drive for that speed got 52mpg, when I head home, I have heavy foot, with 80 mph average all the way home got about 38.6 mpg.
Yesterday, I had an opportunity to do a short drive and test the milage on our 2009 Passion. The temperature was in the low 70's in Nebraska so I could drive with no A/C. I drove 110 miles with about 45 miles of that being interstate and the rest being two lane hwy. On the interstate, I drove about 68mph and on the two lane hwy, I drove around 62mph. I also used the "D" mode on the transmission for this trip. (I normally manually shift but I read somewhere recently that the "D" mode allows for better milage.)
It was mostly flat with a few rolling hills. When I got back, I toped off the tank, expecting it to take at least 2.5 gallons. The pump auto stopped at 1.9 gallons and I squezed it up to 2.0 gallons.
That's 55 MPG!! I was very pleased! My previous best was 48mpg. Average driving around town is closer to 38mpg.

Short answer: 40-42 mpg for my daily commute, no highway driving at all.
Long answer: Just got my '08 cabrio back from the Germantown MD dealer for the 10K service, bought the car Mar 09 from there as a new leftover with a 10% rebate off the sticker price. I drive in what are ideal conditions for the Smart - mostly rural 2 lane county roads (50-60 mph) with little traffic, trans 'locked' in 5th manually to avoid all that tedious (and unneeded) downshifting due to the light hilly conditions, 75 mi roundtrip to Aberdeen Proving Ground each day. I do pass thru almost 3 dozen lights, but don't get to most of them until I approach civilization. My worst tank was my 1st when I got the car, 37 mpg. I now almost always get 40-42 mpg, sometimes 39, sometimes 43, but either of those are rare. My best ever (46.5 mpg) was a steady interstate 65 mph. I always fill the tank to max and virtually never have the 'I can't get the last bar to light up when its filled' problem. I also calculate MPG manually (trip odo vs gals used at the pump), no trip computer nonesense. I typically accelerate hard in 1st & 2nd leaving the trans in auto thru all the shifts but get off the gas to accel slower in the lower gears (that's the way I usually drive all my cars, no special Smart hyper/technique here). I usually have the top down for my drives home, though that will be stopping now that its getting colder. markf
PS - if you know anyone who installs a cruise control in the MD-DC-PA-VA area, please drop me a line.
Let's start hearing some real world MPG's! One review I read said they couldn't get it to get better than 35.5 MPG!! Please tell us this isn't so! I can't justify confirming my order (1256) if the fortwo can't average over 40. We should keep this seperate posting just for MPG averages.
Current 2008 Smart Passion fortwo owner, I get 37mpg around town- That is not flooring my gas pedal so everyone stops honking. Although when i choose to drive faster I still get 35mpg around town. I also use super unleaded which is the most expensive gas and i still fill past full for under $20.00. Buy it, it will best investment in your life.
City Miliage usually constitutes stop and go traffic and not averaging more than 40mph.
Highway usually constitutes Long stretches at a constant speed above 40mph.
That being said, without A/C I get 40mpg city and 50 highway when I drive alone. I say that because I commute 30mi round trip in stop and go traffic both ways. I don't get above 30 or 40 any given day for longer than 5 min. This is city miliage because of how bad the traffic is, not because of the type of rodeway it is. I got my 50mpg on my way back from Austin to Dallas, not exceding 55mph and using 100% gasoline, no ethenol. The 40 has ethenol.
You may not think the hywy miliage is realistic, but it is, if you want the miliage. Don't complain when you drive 80 and only get 35MPG.
yeah lets see those numbers. I bet you can't beat the 46 MPG that I get in my $500 1993 Geo Metro with 120k miles on it!
I just purchased a K & N air filter with the hopes of increasing my mileage. I checked the mileage on my last two fill ups and got 46.6 & 46.7 mpg as a base point. I am also going to put larger diameter 70 or even 75 series to try to drop the highway rpm's. I drive mostly highway at about 65 to 70 miles per hour. I might even go with the custom exhaust for another 6hp which might increase the miles per gallon. But on the other side of the coin the car is a cheap piece of junk that is always in the dealer for expensive service.
If I could do it all over I would not have purchased the car and YES the little Geo is what I would have purchased and rebuild the engine & trans and it would still be less expensive than the smart and so would the insurance. GET YOU GEO BACK.

I don't appreciate your troll. This is a smart car fan site and you come on and call the car junk. If you don't like the car sell it and leave our forum.
