We've driven 17,000 miles in our 2008 Passion and it has averaged 38MPG. We drove it to Chicago where we now live from Boston when it was brand new (50 miles on it) and it got 47 MPG with one tank, but that was unusual. During the summer IF we drive highway miles it will get 42 to 43 MPG's , in and around town (or mixed w/ hiway) driving in SUMMER it get 39. It's the Chicago winters that decrease the mileage due to WINTER BLENDS. We got as low and 28mpg once! This is driving both with and without shift as my wife likes to shift and I like to put it in drive and let here go. This is also w/o any severely conscious attempt to maximize the mileage.....we drive normally, accelerate when needed, drive at trffic flow 65mph's, etc.
If you want the highest possible mileage, this is *not* the car for you. It's a car w/ unique (and yes, quirky) capabilities. The FACT that it's "green" from the ground up, meaning the whole car from bumper to bumper is built to be green and that it's "fun" to drive and SAFE to drive is what we like about it. Someone PLEASE tell me what we're going to do with all the batteries from the electric and hybrid cars running around? Oh, right, we're going to recell and recycle them.....and at what envrironmental cost????
ps - we LOVE the car.
