06 Mercedes Smart 60 mpg

I have an 06 Smart and if I drive 60 mph in 6th gear on flat ground , it will get 60 mpg. a best of 61.7mpg so far. I run Mobile one 0W40 Synthetic oil. I average 44 mpg commuting in rush hour traffic. This is my second 06 Smart, the first was a hard top and my present one is a Cabriolet. I would much rather have a used o5 or 06 then a brand new 08 up.

While in the beginning, last fall the best I got was 41 MPG. Then during the winter I was getting much less, in the mid to upper 30’s. I was pleasantly surprise when this summer I am averaging 43 MPG. I thought it was a fluke on the first tank at 43 MPG but now I have had several fill ups in a row at 43 MPG.

I average about 28 mpg city, 34 highway these days I don't know what's wrong. On its scheduled maintenance, I told the service guy what I was averaging and he said "sounds about right." I just can't believe that, given how much better the reports on this forum are.

I'm pretty disappointed in the fuel economy of this car. Did I get a lemon??

Your weight and driving habits have alot to do with it. I run the AC all the time and 125 lbs heavier than I should be and I average 36.3 MPG right now.

I weigh just under 120 lbs. and run the a/c about half the time. My driving habits are leftover from my husband's "hypermiling" training that he made me do when he first purchased his Prius about two years ago. Given that, compared to your MPG, I'm not doing so hot.

Howmany miles on your car? You sound way down. What type of fuel do you use? how long is your average trip?

4479 on my car, average trip between 3-6 miles. I started out on regular/87 octane, quickly switched to premium and used that steady for almost 6 months. Didn't seem to make a difference so as an experiment, I switched back to regular. No change.

Best mpg I ever got was 36.3 driving from Vegas to LA on a tank of regular in 100ş + heat, third fuel-up, under 500 miles on the car. Go figure.

I'm kinda down on it for sure. I was expecting at least a little better from the car. I know my circumstances (LA stop-and-go, short trips, etc.) don't make for the best mileage situation, so I've mostly written it off as that... but the hubby drives a Prius, which doesn't help my state of mind when it comes to gas mileage

LASmartie, short city driving will give you the worst MPG.

I've been thrilled with my mileage. My SUV was a 14 gallon fill-up each week. My 8 gallon Smart can go 2 weeks between fill-ups because I'm averaging 44mpg.

I just bought an ecometer (which I highly recommend) & I expect to get even better mileage. But more relevant is the readings in 1st & 2nd gear. I think it reads about 9-16mpg. 3rd gear gets you around 24-35mpg. And mileage dramatically increases in the lower rpm range in 4th & 5th gear where it often reads 60+mpg.

Being gentle on the accelerator & a bit quicker on the shift seems to yield the most fuel economy. You may want to try an ecometer just to get an idea what's going on. It's quite revealing.

Good luck!

You will get better MPG as you add miles. your use of low grade fuel will add to your low MPG over time. go back to at least 91oct. another reason your MPG is low is your Short trips. The smart tends to run a bit rich when warming up. at 3-6 mile your car never warms up.
