Some of you read my post a couple days ago when I was only averaging 30 MPG. Well after a new air filter and an mobil 1 oil and filter change (did all my self). The last tank I averaged 39 MPG! Thats more like it. I was so happy with my smart car I installed a Clarion double din (model VX409) touch screen radio with Sirius radio. I did this install myself also. It is nice to work on my own car again, I have not changed my own oil or installed a stereo myself in 10 - 15 years. This little car brings back the good old days, when a car was simple and gas milage mattered. I am not a tree hugger, I just like to know I am giving less to the Saudis and more to me!
My fuel economy has climbed rapidly as of late, as well.
I changed my oil about a month ago at 5,200 miles. I was averaging about 30-31 combined (I have a heavy foot/do a lot of city driving and 75+ MPH freeway driving)... it works hard, so I'm not going to gripe about 30.
The day after changing my oil, I took a ~600 mile round trip through the Pennsylvania mountains with the A/C on max, and I got 42 average on that trip. Since then - I have been consistently averaging 38 combined in my everyday driving.
I'm beginning to wonder if it was the long trip that allowed it to finally get situated, or if it was the oil change... my driving habits surely haven't changed.
I know I will not go 20K between air filter changes. 10K Max, my old one was pretty dirty at 7,500K. They are much easier to change then the smart page shows, just disconnect main hose and the three clips.

Next project? How about self-installed cruise control? You won't regret it!
I'm glad you came back and posted this mpg update.
It is so good to hear your MPG improved and it will over time as you use your car more and more. I too average 38 to the gallon and am not ashamed to say it or show off my car anytime i get to.
I've only had my smart for a couple of months, 6 fillups counting the dealer's original. My first averaged 27.0 mpg, my sixth averaged 36.6. I've picked up 1-2 mpg each fillup. I've got a 600+ mile trip this weekend and can't wait to see the mpg.
Guess I've been a little lucky, or light footed. After 8 tanks and 1481 miles the avg is 39.6mpg. (38.6, 41.7, 43.1, 34.3, 36.1, 43.7) The 40's are mostly highway and the 30's mostly stop & go. All my fillups have been with BP 93 octane.
Yes I know the list is short one tank, but I didn't have a pen. By the time I got home I had forgotten the ... oops, I forgot what was I talking about.

In warm weather its easy. In cold weather its not so easy.
