Anything to be cool...

I'm going to put a screen behind the enlarged vents to dress-it-up a little. The fan on the side does not come on near as often. It has a thermostat that triggers at 150 degrees...

I'm hoping and guessing this is on topic (seeing that the subject is not too clear)...

What are the advantages to having your rear vents opened like that?
And do they pose any hazard?

Just wondering, I'm now getting interested in performance upgrades too.

It reduces the temperature in the engine bay. This is particularly important if you have a turbo because the extra HP adds heat. Most of the currently available turbo kits are drawing air from the engine compartment...

jack wants to have credit for hacking up his car first but actually i hacked up mine before him, althou it was his idea
you'll notice v-1 has smaller openings, not quite as much cooling as v-2

first cutouts

Jack,

Does this create any sort of flow thru the engine compartment that you can tell? I kind of like the look. Also, what about structurally for the piece that has cutouts... any signs of fatigue?

OK. I'm interested. As far as looks, I think it is butt-ugly, but I can imagine making one big opening, adding a screen that has been plated to match a color scheme..... it gets the mind working.

So, I'd like info on this one. Got any hard data or anecdotal evidence of the effectiveness?

Thanks.

Makes the smart look like a shop vac and makes it look like you can walk up hook up a hose and start vacuuming the interior.

It is definitely flowing more air over the engine. I am recording lower inlet air temperatures on my scan-gage and my thermostatically controlled fan (150 degrees) rarely comes on anymore. I really think the turbo/heat problem might be solved.

The jury is still out on the structural integrity. I cut large holes in the bumper and threw away the stock reinforcement panel that runs across the inside top edge of the back bumper. I'll see if things start "sagging" over time.

Donny's design cuts smaller holes in the bumper and maintains the reinforcement panel. His design has a better chance of surviving the test of time.

And yes, Donny cut-up his car first. However, as soon as he told me about it, I ran over to Home Depot and bought a jig-saw...

Overal, I think this new bumper design opens up lots of new possibilities. I had basically stopped making performance upgrades to my turbo kit because I didn't have a good way to get rid of the extra heat that more HP brings. Now I plan to upgrade the valve springs and install a spacer in the cylinder head to drop the compression ratio from 10 to 1, to 8.5 to 1 so I can start running some real boost!...

Would it not work to do a water to air intercooler and then run a turbo blanket and other heat management devices before cutting big holes in the car?

I guess there are many ways to skin a cat.
