An udderly custom turbo

I’m leaving in a few hours for Yosemite to climb Half Dome. This has been in the planning for several months, and I can’t wait! I’ll be off the grid for several days… for the geeks out there, I use a gps & satellite based tracking service called Find Me Spot, and I can be tracked here. Ten years ago, I actually helped establish the satellite constellation that Find Me Spot uses.

What does this have to do with the Turbo thread on SCOA? Glad you asked. There is something else that has been in the planning stages for several months, and I can’t wait to see how it turns out.

I left my smart with Larry (LittoDevil) along with most of the contents of my checking account. We are starting with Jack’s $2k turbo, then taking it up a notch with Larry’s special blend of herbs & spices.

The goal was to get as much torque in the lower RPM’s as practical, and to retain the cat and the ability to use the stock muffler. I told Larry I didn’t care about top end power or speed (not interested in raising/eliminating the speed limiter) but want acceleration down in the low RPM range. I’m unsure if anything has been done quite like this, and it is somewhat experimental. I’m OK with that.

Should be done once I re-enter civilization, although there was some question on whether or not the intercooler will be ready. If not, we’ll add it later.

Part’s list:
• Jack’s basic turbo
• Split Second piggy back ECU
• Larger injectors
• Blow-off valve
• Intercooler
• Denso Iridium plugs
• Waste gate set around 9 or 10 psi
• Tuning by Larry

I chose Jack’s basic turbo as the starting point because initially I was going to just install it with nothing else, drive it like that for awhile, and then add the other bits later on. I felt Jack’s system was a decent trade between performance and cost, creating a way to get my toe into Turbo-land without breaking the bank. But somehow Larry convinced me to simply go for it and the next thing I knew I was begging him to take my money….

I want to say that my choice in the basic set-up neither endorses Jack nor rejects SFR. While I’m at it, I hope this thread doesn’t become another forum for alpha-males trying show how much they know by trashing someone and/or thing. I’ve been on the turbo thread as long as anyone. And while there has been no end of hyperbole, everyone who has ever posted has had something to contribute. For the life of me, I can’t understand why this has become an emotionally charged subject here on the forum. Like I said somewhere else, it has taken the fun out of reading people’s experiences.

So, let’s check the emotions at the door, have fun and see where this takes us. I’ll be back in about a week.

careful with the denso's, the brisks might be a better choice.

I didn't get him Denso, no worries I got him what I first started using which were Silver racing plugs. For those who don't know, there's nothing wrong with Denso plugs except they were designed for long life and I don't need a plug that last a million miles especially in the same heat range as the stock plugs. I needed something that was one step colder to prevent detonation, and can transfer more heat out of the cylinder while keeping it hot enough so it stays in it's "self cleaning" zone.

This should turn out sweet ;)

My water to air intercooler engineered onto Jack's stage 1 turbo with the proper larger injectors for more safe headroom and Split sec piggy back ECU from Tim at SFR and my tuning

I can't wait to put it all together this week and drive it myself ;)
