jediknight- the engine compartment in the New Beetle is so tight.. the AVERAGE person can't get their hand around to do any work. Heck.. replacing a headlight bulb.. A HEADLIGHT BULB is a chore in itself.
Ok, so is anyone forgetting how much Insurance is for a youth?? Come on ppl, it is not a wise buy for a young HS student. Do like YellowSmart said. Get an older car, one that you can buy for 3k off a lot. Then you only need to have Liability which is way cheaper, unless you can't drive and crash cars a lot. Then get Full coverage. Also depends on how much of a crime area you live in. Wait until you get established. The Smart car is here to stay. All it can do is get better. Think about it. The ED might show up in 2010 and the TDI version after that.
wow all these replies are amazing! My rents would have the car under their name, and they are capable of paying it off if that was completely necessary... i do have some rich relatives but idk if my parents would want me to go that route. this would NOT be my first car! and insurance really isn't that expensive? like 60/mo well I'm not sure if thats expensive lol well g2g to school. be back in like 4.5 hours?---computers
My mom and dad would actually pay for some of it, because they would drive it a lot, I'm sure.
Interest would be like 5% and we would put like 5-7k down on a like 19595 dollar car so what do you think now, and I will check our job board in school...
I'm against this for so many reasons. Listen, I'm not trying to flame you or tell you that I think you and/or your parents are crazy, but that is what comes to mind when I sit here and listen to you want to buy a $19-20K car.
I wrecked every car my parents gave me in H.S. (total of 2). One of them I wrecked three times. Thats 4 accidents. NONE of them were my fault, other drivers caused every single one of them. I drove a total of 4 different cars in H.S., but only two were mine.
Since H.S. (22 years ago), I've had 6 cars. Only one of them has been hit, and it was from behind. Again, no fault of my own.
The insurance for my wife and I on her Smart is almost $600 per year (full coverage), no way yours is only going to be $60/month, better check again.
Basically, the only thing I see from you getting this car, is your parents planting you 6 feet under. Not a pretty thought, but there it is.
All my brothers have kids, and I'd tell each and every one of them the same thing.

NO DRIVERS ED TODAY!
Thanks guys,
Mackenzie>>> i am a boy lol
Well, if your parents are paying for some of it and they are supporting it, then go for it. I think its better to wait till 2010 or so but only you and your parents can make that decision. I know that IF I were going to by my kids a brand new car, it would be the smart. I agree with yellowsmart, but if you found a way and your parents support it, then go for it!
It sounds like alot of us on here are jealous! If my parents would have been in the position to buy or even help me buy a new car, I'd have jumped on it. Especially if it was the hottest car of that year. (what was the hottest car in 1982?) Instead, they bought me a 10 year old MG Midget for $1200 and I was in heaven! It was a maintenance nightmare but I loved it and learned a little about cars along the way.
There is a reason why insurance is high for new drivers. Most of them wreck at least once! I did while I was driving my parents AMC Concord. I agree that its probably a good idea to drive a "clunker" for a year or so, then move up to something nicer. As for the job, I think everyones first job should be in fast food. That way you will appreciate every job afterwards!
