Configuration to delivery time?? Maybe sooner??

I am kinda wondering if some of us may be getting cars sooner than we may expect. I at first was being told it would be close to four months for delivery after the confirmation email. I was in Austin last the last couple of days and the dealer there is saying 60 to 90 days after configuration you should have your car. I explained that most are saying four months or more, and he stated that we cant go by config emails that were sent last year because they were not selling the cars last year. He said that Smart is telling them 90 days max. This may just be nothing, but I am just wondering if anyone else is getting this story?

I heard the same story from the Seattle dealer, but from what I can glean from postings I'm doubtful. We configured in December with a 1225 number. That should mean that ours would be here by next month. However, they only delivered a 1173 close to the end of January.

It is completely logical that Smart would redirect some of their production capacity to the US with all the reservations they received, and if that causes some of their international dealers to have to wait a few more days for cars that would help sales. Sales are all about creating some buyer anxiety. If word goes out in say Italy that it might be harder to get a Smart over the next few months because of the high demand in the US I would imagine it would help those local salesmen close some sales. People on the fence better hurry up and get one because you might not get a second chance for awhile. That strategy is sure moving orphans fast. I can hear champagne corks popping at the factory in France right now. They're gonna make some money this year.

great...they can't figure out how to move the ones they got there already!

On paper, the process should take about two months, but I think 3 months is a safer estimate. The real key bit of data that would be nice is to know exactly when your order has been assigned for productioin, or when the VIN has been assigned. It would really be nice to know the time between config and VIN assignment- that could be anywhere from 2 weeks to 2 months on its own!

If this were correct, my car would be here around the 17th of February since I configured on November 17. So far, not a word. This is absolutely the worst experience I have ever had purchasing a car.
