Do You Really Need A Reservation For A New Smart?

Out of curiousity I decided to look for available smarts on autotrader.com. Smart is an available option in the drop-down menu. Choose it and then change the distance from your zip code to any. You will be surprised to find there are auto dealerships with smart's on hand and available for sale.

I found one dealership with 14 in stock, prices ranging from $14K to $18K. Another had 6 in stock and another had 12. There are also dealerships with just one individual listing.

This was quite a surprise to me. There are so many people who put $99 dollars down and have been wondering when they will get their phone call letting them know it's ready. It would appear to me that if I was willing to take a plane ride I could purchase one from a dealer now and just go pick it up. If I was one of the 30K waiting this would upset me. So - do you really need a reservation? Why would dealers be listing them for sale on autotrader if you can only purchase one via registration? I'm confused!

Call the dealer and make sure. My smart was listed on the autotrader website despite the fact that it was residing in my garage already. As explained elsewhere, my understanding was that the inventory of a particular dealer may have been automatically uploaded to the trader site.

There is one available listed at one of my local dealers but I was just there yesterday and they said they had none available. Hmm....

Remember that autotrader.com is yet another IB operation (as is the smartUSA processing account). IB holds all the information.

Maybe the "real" PAG/smartUSA organization ought to know about IB fluffing their other operations with "our" cars.

Over the last month or so with the new cars being delivered and every one posting a VIN several folks have made some comment about security or safety concerns about posting a full VIN

I am semi curious about what kind of mischief any one could do knowing my VIN... it is on many documents, clearly displayed in the windshield of any car...I just don't see how posting it can be used for nefarious reasons...

enlighten please

There is a scam going on with keyless entry where thieves write down the VIN on your car and then go to the dealer and claim they needed a new key. Once they got the key they could steal the car. Of course you need to know where the car lives.
