As Mercedes do not import the cars (Penske Auto Group are the importers) the smart centers are authorized by PAG and they require them to be in a separate location (but not necessarily a stand alone building) from the primary dealership area. There are a lot co-located with M-B dealers but the one recently opened in Cincinnati is with a Porsche dealership. Either way, the main dealership normally has nothing to do with the smart center.

One of my co-workers relayed his similar experiences with his Mini and the co-located BMW dealerships.

I.e., "my" Dealership in Alexandria Virginia (suburb of Washington DC, though established well before the District of Columbia) is part of the Lindsay Automotive Group. It handles primarily Cadillac.
The physically independent but administratively connected smart Center used to be a Saturn dealership and has been totally revamped for the occasion. It's located across the street from the Cadillac, in a block that has only Lindsay related buildings: Cadillac, Lexus, Chevrolet, Volkswagen, Ford, Isuzu Trucks and Saturn.
