yes I think you may have figured wrong... I put an exhaust header and intake, 18" wheels, and sport suspension on my '03 toyota matrix (with full stock body kit) and it actually got a little bit better gas mileage. I could go from waco to dallas and back on half of a tank

(about 200 miles round trip) got around 38 MPG on the highway compared to 36 with out the mods... IDK that's just my experience.
side note* one thing i did notice... when i went from the 15" steelies to the 18" TRD (rebadged Racing Harts i think) It did "feel" like it accelerated slightly slower (all though 1/4 mile times say otherwise...) barely even noticeable, but there. The car did however, feel more "solid". Especially on the highway. I shoulda paid more attention in physics.. I am sure we went over as to why these two things happened.
