You can get your EV model from Walmart in 2008. I just got an catalog from Walmart featuring Smart fortwo EV on the cover. It will cost around $35,000.00. It is put together by a company in N. Carolina. They buy the "glider" from Smart and stuff it with the EV components. If you want one, you can probably see it on Walmart website.

Lets see, $20,000 more than a gas smart... that would buy 5,000 gallons of gas even at $4 per gallon. 5000 gallons at 40 MPG is 200,000 miles. Sorry, I don't think that would save me any money. I would have to drive 40,000 miles a year for five years before I even break even.
My wife and I did the $99 reservation on MAY 11.
Our Reservation Confirmation Number was 5242501226
We got our Invitation to CONFIGURE our car on Dec 21st.
It indicated that "we may be able to deliver your smart fortwo during the second half of 2008."
I was wondering if that was because of the "demand" or because we are in OHIO and there may not be a dealer here until then ?!?
I would GLADLY drive to DETROIT if I could get it any earlier !!!

Deliveries are running at least six months behind confirmations no matter where you live. No one is getting different information who are configuring this month.

For their niche (at this pint) market, the purpose in buying one of these vehicle is not economic. Any alternative to a vanilla internal combustion engine is going to cost more, whether it be a hybrid, diesel, natural gas, or electric vehicle. As marketeers have discovered, the early adopters of these technologies can afford to spend substantially more for these vehicle.
A family member (in the military) ordered one today, actually hoping for a 2009 delivery so they can get it when he returns from Iraq.

Excuse me if I missed this, but after you've made your reservation, received notification that you can place your order at mysmartfortwo.com, and you've followed the steps outlined at the beginning of this thread ... do you sign a purchase agreement?
It sounded as though that would be necessary within a month of having completed the order (not just the reservation). I know there haven't really been any dealers open and yet folks are now happily getting their cars.
Of the folks who are currently taking delivery, what did you have to do since completing your order (not the reservation)? Did the dealer just call and invite you down to complete the purchase agreement on the car at delivery?

Approximately 6 months after you reserve you will recieve another e-mail to configure your vehicle. another six months later if you are lucky you will go to your dealer, do your paperwork, pay the balance and pick up your new smart.
