I think there is a little too much focus on this reservation number. Even though there are 30,000 reservations you cannot tell me that Smart cannot keep up with production. Its a little marketing scheme called supply and demand. They make everyone think that there is a lot more demand than than they can supply to keep the interest up. Then when you see 20 of them at a dealer you snatch it up like it was the last one til next year! It is done all the time with cars, electronics etc.
If they could only manufacture say 20,000 smarts a year then every Smart sold would have to go to the people that have reserved one. Do you really think this will happen, so there will not be a single Smart at the dealership? I am sure that you will be able to go down and purchase a Smart at the dealership, maybe not until Feb or March but you will not have to wait 1 or 2 years, please.
I cant believe everyone is falling for this number game. The longer it takes them to supply the interest will wear off so the last thing they want is for customers that really want one to have to wait 2 years. Since the start in 98 Smart brand has continually failed to make a profit and last year alone only sold 124,000 cars. Their unit goal was 200,000. How can anyone here think that they can only make 24,000 cars for the US in a year with these figures? That leaves them with 70,000 cars short of their goal, where do you think they are trying to make that up at? U S market.
Subcompacts account for a small percentage of US auto sales I think only 2% there is some stiff competition for this 2% of sales. Even though gas prices are going up I think they will have to reach higher figures before you will see a mass migration to the subcompacts.
Im not trying to make anyone mad but I think it is funny that so many are focused on this reservation number and you have to wait a year or longer to get one idea. I really want one too so I hope I am right. Lol
