I made my reservation back in June '07 (I'm a 1260), but after reading these forums I've come to the conclusion it is NOT "first come - first serve".
It seems to me that the cities with the larger number/volume smart dealers are moving through their reservation numbers faster than, say, my area of SW Florida - where there is only one smart dealer for 6+ counties.
So here I sit a 1260, watching as 1311's a higher are confirmed. ARGH!
I don't think there is anything wrong with what people in this forum have used to figure out when the reservation was made or what "place in line you are".
If the confirmation process was being handled at a national level I'm sure we would see it going in order, but since the final confirmation is being handled by the local dealer.... well.... good luck!
Twelve Hundreds - UNITE! (1300's suck - it's my turn not yours)
When I raised this issue with smart USA (via e-mail), I was told:

The invitation to configure your smart fortwo is sent in order of when
you placed your reservation in your geographical location.

My dealer serves the entire state, plus a couple more states.
All 1200's should be given preference before 1300's... I realize these are maybe more highly populated areas than some, BUT I put my reservation in for a car before they did...... what IS fair????? C'Mon, Roger, Dave, ..... HELP us out here !!!!!! Midwest people want their smarts as bad as 'coast' people do.........
1305 here. Listen, I understand the frustration, we all want these cars. It just makes more economic sense to send 20 cars to 4 dealerships that are relatively close to each other than say, 5 cars to one dealership somewhere where it's the only dealer for miles. Or maybe we just "thought" we figured out the order of things and that's not how Smart had intended it. Just get angry if a 1400 makes it first.
Or each dealer is getting about the same number of cars each month, but there are a lot more reservations in one city than another, and a dealer can only handle so many deliveries each month. So dealers with less reservations would have to dig deeper into the reservation dates than the dealers with lots of reservations.
But of course, we are still talking confirmations here - how it plays out down the line in the delivery process remains to be seen. Right now - deliveries are still....first come, first served!
I would expect that LaVista is a smaller dealer. Yet I'm 1227 and haven't configured yet.
Update: I configured on 02/01. I WANT MY BUMBLEBEE!!!!!!!

The dealers have invested a bunch of bucks and count on a certain number of units allocated to them per month in order to remain profitable. This my friends is capitalism and the good old American way.
Those reservers that insist it should be any other way should rethink their position. (That's the nicest way I can put it )
I do not think it has to do this the size of the city. I live near Chicago and I do not have my confirguration email yet. They just tell me that I have to wait they are being sent in the order of the resverations but that is obviously not true. I am 1248.
