Nicholas - If your dealership has given you an "expected delivery date," they
should be able to provide you with your VIN# as well. When I went to my dealer, along with my VIN#, they gave me my 'R11 Selected Unit Details' sheet that also included: the date of production, the ETA, the VIN#, the transportation status (e.g., shipped, etc.) as well as my Smart's configuration and total sticker price. This form looks like it came from headquarters, not a dealer-specific printout. Hopefully, by asking specifically for that sheet, that might prompt your dealer to be a lttle more helpful.
Also, once you have your VIN#, and the fact that you reside on the east coast, you should be able to use the following website to track your Smart as it makes its way toward America. JPaul has posted several excellent tracking threads that you can use.
