"Messages"

Okay, I've had my smart fortwo ED a full week now. I'm getting pretty used to it, and have even now had an opportunity to use the wipers! :-)

If anyone read my post in the Dealerships forum, I noticed that the car was reporting I had one message -- that my car was due for service in 7x days. Well, I now realize that the message is informing me that I'm 80 days PAST due for service. It's a 2015, and I'd like to keep it serviced according to the manual. I should have the remainder of the warranty, so I feel I should get it into a shop ASAP.

So, what exactly IS the service on an electric vehicle? It's got about 17,600 miles (I've put less than 200 on it since I bought it last week). How concerned should I be about having a shop at it?

You should not be concerned. Read the maintenance booklet which should be included with the owners manual in the car. The biggest items in the recommended 2yr/20K mile service interval involves, a service computer check of the battery pack capacity, a brake fluid change (same as the IC engine car) a cabin air filter change and (the only thing unique to the ED) and a battery pack desiccant cartridge replacement. None of this is very critical.

The US/Canada owners manual says nothing about this, but within a few weeks of taking it to the dealer, drive the car down to below a 30 percent SOC wait an hour, then recharge it full. This provides an up to date pack capacity indication.

If you want to reset the annoying service reminder this is the procedure:

Switch on the ignition to position 1.
• Select maintenance indicator within 4 sec by double tapping (like you would a PC mouse) the left instrument cluster button.
• Switch of the ignition to position 0 (off) within 10 sec.
• Push and hold in the instrument cluster button and switch ignition on ("start" the car).
• Hold the instrument cluster button for another 10sec.
• In that time, the wrench symbol on the LCD will flash and eventually reset.

Shouldn't be a problem. I'm sitting at about 30% SOC right now at work, and I have a six mile drive home. The miles remaining indicator is showing 15, so at least I should be able to get home to do this.

Thanks for the other informative stuff, too. Greatly appreciated!
