Test drove an ED today

First and foremost: it's very quiet, and therefor disconcerting. It appears slow because I don't hear the engine or any gear: «single fixed gear ratio». It felt a bit "spongy". But boy is it fast: 0-60 in a blink! Of course, it's the European version, and I had to translate "60Km/h." is "only" 37 mph...!
But otherwise it's like any smart, nothing different... except the pods: total and instant +/- charge (regenerating braking and/or downhill).
I noticed the "engine bay" radiator/fan: «water cooled battery and motor». The car's management is totally iPhone integrated with the appropriate app. «Pre heating and cooling possible» (extreme climate: take note).

Evident shortcoming, the range: only «83 miles or 4-5 hours of travel at typical city speeds». This will most likely be a city car, a second or commuter's car (fleet?). Can be charged overnight on household 110V, or faster on 220V.

At first it's only available on a closed lease with a $2,500 down payment, $599/month, 4 years/40,000 mile contract, the whole duration is under warranty.

Thanks again to scTysons and Wallace ('wrumbarger') for the test drive. They already have an order in, for a distinctive client.

Always was!

No, can't afford one! Especially that my smart is my only car: a trip to NYC — or any long distance — would require a much further range. But I've heard that a local notable (and smart fan) has already signed up for an ED.

This is why they are pushing it as a corporate lease vehicle, not so much for us lowly folks. Corporations can write off the lease amount. And they can look green doing it.

I would feel sorry for any shuck who jumps on the first wave only to see the price plummet in 2 years while he still has 2 years left on the lease.

I'd buy it, pimp it out with full Tesla batteries (while the ED does have the Tesla batteries, the one used in the ED is not the same as the one used in the Roadster), and chrome it out!

Okay, that sounded a little bit too...immature?

I meant to say, "If they sold it, I'd buy it..."

It would be like a discount Tesla...
