Well, after having my car for about 1 month, Geico has given me a quote on comprehensive and collision in addition to the liability they were willing to underwrite when I picked up the car. Comp & Collision will cost me about $280 a year in addition to liability. I live in Northern California and the Smart is a 2nd car.

If anyone was unable to get a quote from Geico earlier on in the purchase process, you should give them a call. It looks like they are beginning to underwrite the cars now.

FINALLY!

The idiots don't even have a database of people that called with interest in insuring the cars... I haven't been informed and I am current customer AND I spoke to the underwriters and others within the company...

Nationwide added mine @ ~$250/6 mos. Super high limits, average deductible. VIN was in the system, but no other info. Quoted me based on MSRP.

Sometime back I talked with a USAA underwriter and she said that they have a bit of experience insuring smarts owned by US service personnel stationed in Europe. USAA is the only US carrier that I know of that will insure foreign.

USAA will NOT insure those of us here in Japan.

But, they did insure my Smart that will live in Arkansas, as soon as it is delivered next week.

USAA quoted $304 for six months in southern California. That's more than they charge for my 2004 Porsche Boxster S!

Anybody else have any USAA quotes in this area?

The key for me was that Geico did insure the car for basic liability. I went in to my policy on-line and added the comp and collision to the car. Got the "agent will contact you" message and they sent me an email within 24 hours indicating the additional cost. I dropped my deductible to $250. Maybe they read my post here about the $180 cost for a 1/4 panel.

Just went and finished the paperwork for the smart and was given the insurance handout for the official insurance carrier, Liberty Insurance.
I called up and started the process, told 10 min.
After 15 min. and answering all sorts of things about my existing cars, I was asked very easy questions about the smart including the year and model.
I answered fortwo and she was confused. Then I asked why all these questions if they were the smart specialists and all I wanted to insure was the smart?
"We don't want to just insure the smart but all the cars."
So I quit and hung up.
What a waste of my time.

Allstate insurance - Oregon

I am getting considerable flack from my Allstate agent about insuring the car. First he said, "I just spoke with my underwriter and we are unable to insure this type of vehicle." Then when pressed about it and a subtle threat about pulling all my insurance and insuring with someone else he came back with, "My manager just called and we can definitely insure the vehicle. He confirmed this with our regional office and they will be contacting our underwriting department. Sorry about the misunderstanding. Please let us know the VIN # upon arrival and the vehicle will be added to the policy." but no quote. When I asked again for a quote he responded with, "What is the cost and VIN number?" Obviously I don't have the VIN. As far as I'm concerned Allstate has just signed their death sentence with me. I'll be looking at other alternatives.
