Progressive in California won't. Out here I got my best quotes from State Farm and Liberty Mutual. Also got worse quotes from Auto Club So Cal and Mercury. 20th Century, Costco/Ameriprise, Geico and Progressive all
(or at least their web sites) said no.
I've taken delivery of my smart and have coverage in effect with State Farm in Michigan. Policy is 100/300 lib, 500 ded broad collision, 0 ded comp. Multi car, homeowner - 269/6mo.
Note on GEICO - had them many years ago when in the military - cancelled me because I had a radar detector in the car.
Somebody please step on that damn lizard!!!
My sense is that this will change rapidly. I don't think the car was officially sold in the US until last week and as such is probably isn't in the computers as a US car. Probably listed as Canadian or personal import. I think as cars are sold and systems updated more companies will insure.
I will find it interesting to see how body repairs are handled since the panels are just replaced and not repaired. I'm sure until the underwriters figure out how to price that things will also change.
Another company that is insuring the fortwo is Auto Owner's. They initially didn't have any information for my agent, but over the weekend they called back with a quote that beat or matched the best I could find anywhere. Like others have said, exact prices may be meaningless, since we live in many different places with many different levels of risks and we all have different number of vehicles insured and driving records, too, as well as age variances.
Good luck. I have insurance I have a vanity plate, I'm a 1173 and I'm still waiting to take delivery of my car from Michigan. (man, this is 'TORTURE'.....)
My agent for Nationwide said the VIN shows, but with no information. If my car ever comes in, he will write based on sticker, then when info becomes available, the premium will be adjusted.
Liberty Mutual of NJ is charging me $591 for a one year policy with 500 ded. For my smart cabrio.
They also have a promo for new smart owners at www.libertymutual.com/smart

I can wait at least until late Feb, early Mar when we have less chance for snow (and the salt & grime that comes with it) in Chicago so will not get any more anxious until then --- of course I'm a 1188 not a 1173 so I can understand your pain ...
