I know each state varies. In Arizona, State Farm will charge me over $1000 a year for my new 2009 Smart when it gets here. I pay $531 a year for a 2006 Honda CRV which cost twice what a Smart does when I bought it new. Seems high to me for the Smart.
What do you pay? As compared with an average car in your state.

I would suggest to look for different insurance. I got 06 Scion xA, 02 PT Cruiser, and 08 smart with full coverages on the same policy. Smart is cheapest out of three to insure ($600/year).
Lots of variables - age, driving record, credit score, multiple cars, etc. Still, it should be less than your Honda IMHO. FWIW, we added the smart to our home owners and car insurance bundle - extra $200/year.

Passed a law here in Texas that its against the law to base on your credit score. It has nothing to do with how you drive. OMG! Insurance companies are so messed up.
Just checked with my Progressive, and in Texas, I would be saving 174 taking my kia off and putting on the smart. So $$ savings for me. It runs 750ish give or take for a year Full coverage, and I have a $100 deductable which you can't even get anymore. I even have a full year policy which you can't get anymore either. Hehe. One reason I stay with them. Pay a bit more, but when you do get in a wreck, you don't go OMG where do i get $500.

Reason: added my insurance quotes
about $425/year but that's with zero-deductible glass and a higher than normal coverage on liability.
safe drive, multi-car, alarm system and loyalty discounts with ins. provider.
I replaced an 07 Honda Civic Coupe EX with the 08 smart passion coupe and my insurance went down $300/year (all other variables being equal). For comparison, my insurance company (Westfield) rated the Civic with a symbol 19 and the smart with a symbol 8.
Called progressive since my other three cars are there and they wanted 1,200 per year. Called Liberty Mutual and was quoted $700 for a year, went with LM.

In RI, I pay under $700 for a full year with Liberty Mutual. We've been with them for over 40 years and nobody can do better. This is with full coverage, not just liability.
