reason being all those grommets lead to nowhere on the 451 exactly why they got to an inner panel and then are blocked off

That's what I did - put the cross over in the door. I considered pulling new, higher gauge, wire from the amp to the speakers like BabyBenz, but wimped out. So, I use the factory harness from the head unit to the inside of the door to the crossover. Then new, higher gauge, wire from the crossover to the tweeter and also the crossover to the mid range speaker. (For a sub, I'm using the 4smart JL unit, which I can recommend.)

I plan on pulling body panels next summer to get them painted. When I do that, I'll upgrade the wiring similar to what BabyBenz is doing.
