Independent repair shops for smarts seem difficult to find currently. Competition helps consumers. The faster independent suppliers grow and there are independent garages working on smarts to compete w/ the dealers, the better off all smart owners will be. I hope the information in this thread will grow as other smart owners post repair shop information they discover and that this thread will be a useful resource to smart owners, providing them repair options.
support independents!
Below is a list [just the beginning I hope] of independent shops I have been able to find. I only have personal experience w/ Stepke Imports in LA, and can highly recommend them.

Excellent post! Let's get more entries.
Question: just how did you go about getting such an ecletic listing?
How can we, the unclean masses, go about determining such a detailed listing of shops? Did you do an internets search?
They now have a full MB Star system with the Smart sections. I will confirm if they have Smart info for the 450 model (pre-2008) as well at my appointment on Thursday.
I have used them before and they are great. Also wonderful for any Mercedes and BMW work you might need. Excellent guys.
Can warranty service be obtained from a non-Smart dealer? I know that in Riverside, CA, the Smart Car dealer does not have a garage and sends all of there service over to the Mercedes dealer around the corner, but I believe both dealerships are under the same ownership, or at least they have a very special arrangement.
Someone suggested that I may be able to get service at a nearby Mercedes dealer, as it's 80 miles to the nearest Smart dealer in Riverside.
Also, for an oil change and other such periodic maintenance, should I stick with a Smart center. I'm skeptical of taking it to Walmart, EZ Lube or other such places.
And finally, regarding the computer software, what's an easy way to verify that I have the latest or if I need an upgrade. I have a 2008 Passion, and a software upgrade was installed last July. Made the shifting much smoother, but I'd still like to see some more improvement.
Some independent shops in the NOVA area would be very nice. The dealerships do an outstanding job on servicing the Smarts, but cheaper options would be nice too.
