and once you can't figure it out or just have too much trouble with it....try your local smart club. There's always at least one "tech guy" in the club that can help out.

I know this is a dumb question but please realize that I am new to the SmartCar so please be kind.

Is there a trick to removing the "push pins" that hold the body panels in place so that they are not damaged?

There are special tools that do it, don't have any pictures of them right now. Also when in a pinch I have used a common metal household fork to do it.

You can also take a 1" putty knife and slide it under the head of the pin so you can raise it up to a point where you can grab it with pliers or your fingers and pull it out. I modified one (as suggested by another member) by cutting a "V" notch in the end which makes it even handier.
Some members have reported that tack pullers, such as used for re-upholstering furniture work well.
