Smarts for Sale - California??

I thought I'd take some matters into my own hands and see if I could find a Smart in my area (Southern California) today... This coming after I got a 2010 delivery date thanks to that crappy estimator. This is what I found:

www.losangeles.craigslist.org - 4 Smart Cars - Costs all jacked up, all used
www.autotrader.com - 10 Smart Cars - Mostly jacked up prices (14K-20K) **I even noticed that the West Covina Smart dealer had two a Cabrio and a Pure. Some new, some barely used

I'm sure these will get snapped up. I'm sure dealers are getting some units delivered for inventory only - not for those with reservations or on the Orphan List. My theory is that those with reservations and on the orphan list (like most of us) know a ton about these cars (especially pricing) and probably aren't going to go for the fun dealer mark-ups/etc (that's business, I guess).

I can get you one from auction. It takes a little work because most dealers are still paying too much but it's possible.

A simple question-have you actually called any of the SoCal dealers to see what they have in orphaned vehicles? They do not list them on their websites, so it will only cost a phone call. Just a suggestion.

My local Ford dealer (Jim Click) took a cabrio in on trade a couple months ago with 4000 miles on it.....they started the price at 24,995 and now they are down to 17,995 and I bet they are open to offers. Nobody is buying anything around here.

It has actually been going between Click Mazda (East Tucson) and Click Ford (Auto Mall). Sales people either haven't done their homework or are just playing "stupid". I was curious about the $24,995 price tag and decided to check it out. They will never sell it if they don't even know what it is that they are selling.
