Adding Autometer Gauges to your Smart Fortwo

If you are interested in adding water temp, oil pressure, oil temperture, or voltmeters to your smart for two, we can help. I own a company called Pit Stop Auto Incorporated, which is an international distribution company, and recently purchaced my own Black/Silver Smart Fortwo. I was very happy with the car, except I never knew how it was performing, so I added an autometer water temp guage, and oil pressure guage. My normal oil pressure when cold is around 50psi at idle, and 25psi when warm. My water temp averages between 195 on cold days, and maxes a little over 210 degress, which is when the fan kicks on. If you would like any pictures feel free to email me at sales@pitstopautoinc.com

It took me almost a month to figure out where to put the senders, and Smart/Mercedez was of no help, so I thought I would share what I have learned on here, to help others from going through the hell that I went through.

-Chris

Isn't his information available through the ODB-II port?
Scanguage and others like it present data - would the Autometer values all be there?

Scanguage does not read oil pressure.

Pictures of Autometer Guages

Wow you guys sent me a ton of email ha ha... heres some photos of my smart, with the guages, I mounted them on the A-Pillar in guage cups. Also here are some photos of my stereo system, and some other minor stuff I did. When I turned my subs on, my licence plate rattled like hell because smart only uses two bolts to hold the plate on, so I disassembled the tail gate, and checked before I drilled, to make sure I wouldnt hit the linear actuator and you will be fine if you drill straight, you have about a sold inch of space. Also I mounted my mag light too instead of having it roll around the car. If you guys are interested, I sell all the parts to make this happen, and I ship internationally.

Post number Three

I'm not sure about scan guage, I've never personally used it before. Though I do know that it goes directly into your diog. port, which is alot easier than what I did, but then you dont get to have cool looking analog guages =)

Still working on figuring out how to post images directly into these threads, but I dont mind emailing you guys. For those of you who asked, For the water temp sender, I put the sender inline, on the hose that goes directly into the bottom of the coolant tank. It is hell to get to, but reads the best from there. Under your front passenger tire, you will see the return line for your radiator, and I tried the sendor there as well, but It wasnt accurate. For the oil pressure I used a brass tee fitting that I sell, and put it just above the oil filter where the stock oil pressure idiot light switch goes. You can fit either the oil pressure or oil temp sender there. Since I am using a water temp guages, I saw no need for oil temp as well. I used 2 1/16 guages, and autometer's black guage mounting cups and mounted them on my driver side a-pillar next to the windshield. I wasnt able to find a company to make an a-pillar guage mount for a smart yet, and I tried several universal ones from Pep Boys, Autometer, and APC and none fit the contour of the smart. But I'm sure in due time someone will come out with a nice mount for them. The only hastle that I ran into was the radiator. I had to drain the radiator, and believe it or not mercedez/smart when I called and asked them if there was any particular way for me to do this I got the response "I dont know, we havnt had to do this yet ! ! !" yes from the dealer... so I did the logical next step, and disconnected the hose under the passenger front tire, and jacked up the driver side rear tire in the air and made all the fluid drain out. Once the fluid was out, I disconnected the hose leading from the coolant tank to the radiator, picked it up, then disconnected the hose directly on the bottom of it. Then I cut it in half, and made my own sender holder out of aluminum ( which I now sell ) and put it inline on the hose. Then I bolted everything back together, refilled the coolant, wired the guage, and was ready to roll. Oil pressure was pretty simple, and every forum I checked, people were drilling and tapping the drain plug, and to me that just seemed unnecessary. So I did some research and found a really nice brass tee that fits perfectly there... ( I also now sell this too ) If you have any further questions you can visit our shop and see my smart in corona, ca, usa. We do ship internationaly for those of you in other countries too. Feel free to call or email at sales@pitstopautoinc.com or 909.996.3566

Thank you,
-Chris from Pit Stop
