Sadly, I've found that I get burned about 95% of the time if I see a potential problem and just decide to take my chances.
Maybe it's because I'm an engineer: I swear that regular person can drive down the road at 75mph with a queen sized mattress tied to the roof of their car with two loops of yarn and have no problems.

But if I were to transport the same mattress on a roof rack with ratchet straps, the wind would get under it, fold it in half, ruin the springs inside, and then rip the roof rack off of my car.
I really do like the storage idea and hope that some of the smart aftermarket accessory vendors come up with something like it that is designed, tested, and doesn't fail or become detached due to heat, cold, plasticizers, UV, etc. Hint-hint!
