Aftermarket wheels

Since only our US Smart was equiped with tirepressure sensors can anybody explain to me what must be done to convert to lets say 17"? I've never owned a vehicle with these sensors and 3500$ for lorinsers is way to much.

You can buy any kind of set for about 2000$ delivered from euro tuners.

OR: Can you just pull the bulb out of the cockpit display and not worry about the sensors?

Thanks

Bobby

I haven't got my Smart yet. However, I do have a Jeep with tire pressure sensors. When I got new wheels, all I had to do was yank them out of the old wheels and install them in the new ones.

I was told that - if I didn't have the sensors - the light wouldn't come on. The computer would 'adjust' for it.

Not sure if there's a balance issue or something with the wheels you're looking at, or if it's a low-profile thing.

Your pal,
Meat.

Well, the tech in Jax and my guy in Frankfurt Germany are looking into the issue for me. My guy in germany thinks it should be possible to turn it off electronicaly. I'll post when they both get back with me.

Haven't actually seen the one on the smart wheels but I suspect it probably looks like most sensors such as one pictured below. The computer will look for the sensors. Any tire shop with the right equipment should be able to adjust and calibrate new sensors.

When you buy new wheels, most the new designs will allow the conversion of the factory sensors over to the new wheels. You shouldn't have to buy new sensors unless one is damaged in mounting/dismounting.

Tire Rack sells a seneor set for $289. The ones I've seen from them is a Beru set, which is a high quality German manufacturer.

What we need are more government regulations........ thanks to all the Explorer drivers who can't tell a low tire when they see one. (If they ever looked.....)

Got the call back from JAX. If I buy true 451 wheels the sensor simply gets moved from old wheel to new. and if for some outlandish reason the light still comes on i'll either pull the buld out from behind the display OR bget a tiny smart sticker and cover the damn thing up. period!

check out rs-parts!

the RC2 17". SWEET

its more then just check light. if you dont have the sensors in the car the traction control, stablity and abs wont function properly. You can buy extra sets of sensors as well but they are a pain to program and as far as i know you have to have a smart diagnostic computer to do it.

just take each sensor out and put it in the wheel it is going to replace. ie right front sensor goes to the new right front wheel.

It suprises me that every other system will shut off when tps is disabled. the Tech at Smart Jax said there should be no problem. "should" be that is. I'll do more research but the RC-2 17" are going on Jack Black one way or the other!

Oh. how are they interconnected. Traction control uses the same chopper plates that the ABS use as does the stability control ( with added input ). I've seen nothing that shows a reader of tire pressure in either of these two systems.
