I doubt that the sensors will even fit inside a 35 or 40 series tire. I left them out of mine.

just take each sensor out and put it in the wheel it is going to replace. ie right front sensor goes to the new right front wheel.

SmartTech... I do not have one yet ...nor have I gone to the tech classes as you did... but you keep posting stuff that does not seem to hold water...

The programing of the TPS is clearly in the owners manual and does not seem very hard... Perhaps you mean how to use the computer to get a new TPS to be recognized by the system? BUT even then...there is a member who bought 4 new sensors and installed them DIY inside his new rims and never posted anything about needing a smart tech to program them

My other issue is your claim that the TPS has an interaction with the ESP and Traction control program... I do not know the truth of this yet, but I strongly believe the TPS is not tied to the stability or traction safety systems

Feel free to educate us with more specific technical details on how the systems interact with each other

Dunno much about the sensors, but could the owner of the four new sensors not be noting any problems because the TPMS receiver is not "seeing" any of the new sensors in the first place - as if they are not there?

I guess the quick-and-dirty test would be to partially deflate one tire and see if the warning light comes on.

The default of most tire pressure sensors is that any reading less than what it is supposed to see triggers the warning light. No sensor at all would trigger the light. I can't speak specifically for the smart, but can't imagine a different scenario.

OK, for those of us that are going to have four on the ground the same size (15,16 of 17) and use the extra front for a spare - does the spare get a TPS or not? I presume these are mini generators so if the spare looses air then the warning won't go off - or will it? I would think we inflate to the higher rear pressure and deflate if installed as a spare on the front. And IMHO, all this tire warning is BS after driving cars since before I was 16 and that was 47 years of never having an IDIOT light tell me I had a low tire. Look before getting in, know your car and feel the changes.....all this because "Big Brother" thinks we need to protect ourselves from ourselves........

I s'pose, but the scenario I recall is that the monitor shows a warning if the pressure in one tire varies from what they were set at, and why the TPMS has to be reset after a repair (to re-establish the baseline for comparison). If there were no signal received from the sensors, the baseline is 0 and obvioulsy nothing will show below 0.

We have heard stories of smarts being delivered with tire pressures way off factory spec. But apparently the TPMS monitor was set with those wrong pressures and it was happy. When the tires were inflated to proper pressure and the monitor reset, it was again happy. But that sort of means that the monitor has to know that there are 29psi and 36psi mountings, and where they are, unless each wheel has its own receiver in close proximity.

It is too bad that these cars have to be so electronically complex.

I don't know if that's correct; when I got a nail in my tire (my exThing is a lovely creature) the light came on after the PSI dropped 5. I put air in and the light went off. I got the tire repaired, and the light never came back on (I can see how much PSI is in each tire). There wasn't a recalibration done on the unit itself.

Your pal,
Meat.
