Area 451 Cruise Control

The Area 451 cruise control is now available and being sold by the sole retailer SmartieParts. The price is right and it looks like it is going to be a great option for the smart. I am rather far down the list for one of these and would very much appreciate it if one of you who is near the top of the list to get one would post you comments on the installation and operation of this unit.

I'm #833 on the list. Much sadness.

Area 451 cruise control looks like a well designed product and yes, the price appears to be right and the installation a breeze.

However I shall not buy one as I really do not see the need for a cruise control on a smart.

May be I'll change my mind when they/if they ever sell the BRABUS in the US?

To those who have and to those who will cancel your 451 CC reservation: I was wondering the reason that you are canceling? I'm guessing for some it may be price, or your usage of your smart doesn't warrant a cruise control and for others it may be timing but I'm just curious as to "the why" of otherwise a very desirable product someone would want for any car.

I don't think it will increase my mileage significantly enough to warrant the cost of the CC based on my driving patterns & habits.

Look at it another way....

I'm looking at the cruise control in a slightly different way. I'm figuring I will get a LOT of usage of it while I own the car, but when if and when I go to sell it, it will be an added incentive to the purchaser and I will undoubtedly make my smart car appeal to a perspective buyer that much more than one without the cruise control.

Additionally, I have found that with my car, I tend to gradually not press on the accelerator as much when I'm driving for sustained periods of time at highway or freeway speeds. I was commenting just the other day about how with most cars I have a hard time staying UNDER the speed limit, but with my smartie I often find I'm constantly having to 'step on it' to get back up to the speed limit. I'm hoping the cruise control will help me not look like the car is incapable of going highway speeds and being a 'rolling roadblock'. I am SO THANKFUL that a cruise control has become available and can't wait to get it installed.

$500 or so for a cruise control is pretty steep. Get a generic for $100 or so.
