Auto-wiper mod

After coming out the other day only to find my smart dead due to my leaving the auto wiper in auto, I decided to complete this mod. I picked up a fog light relay and some connectors at advanced auto. took the wiper switch out and ran all the pins though a test to see what connects with each position on the switch. I narrowed it down to pin 6 and 2 for the auto position. Pin 6 connects at all positions except for off, so it must be the common thread to the switch. I then switched pin 2 since it is the only pin that completes a circuit with the relay. I hooked the relay to a acc. post in the fuse box. Now, if the key is off so is the auto wipers. :woohoo

Pin two is the second pin on the top row of the switch plug and 6 is the first pin on the bottom row. pin 3&4 and 9&10 do not have wires connected to them.

So, I have yet to hear a firm scenario for this issue. I leave my auto wipers & lights on all the time, and have not yet had a battery issue. Am I gambling? Lucky? Fixed in '09?

I've had my car since April 2008 - and leave the auto wipers and lights on all the time. I also don't drive it every day - it sometimes just sits for 3 or 4 days. I've never had a dead battery, so either I'm really, really lucky or there's something else going on here. - sheureka

I drove mine for 6 months with out issue also.. Then I had it flashed to fix the 7/8 gas gage issue ( when at the dealer to fix another issue) and the dead battery thing started. It could be the battery getting weak.... If that is the case then I am still better off with this mod. I thought about getting a new battery but the mod cost me a little bit of time and about 8.00 bucks. A new battery would be 100+. And, the 3rd reason I did it was to stop the alternator from needing to recharge the battery ( new or old ) every morning which could extend the life of the alternator.

Mine is a 3/08 build and, like Shureka, I frequently forget to turn off the auto wipers, sometimes for weeks at a time. Either I've been lucky too or she's right that there is something else involved. I never had a problem even if the car sat for a few days with auto wipers on.

I do not disagree with you guys. I also left mine on with no problems until I got that flash/upgrade.

Good test for the new switch today. Auto lights and wipers will be on for over 24 hr with out starting the car. If all is truly fixed the car will start in am.
